5 Fantastic Fall Cocktails in WNY

Must Try Fall Cocktails

We love pumpkin beer as much as any human and locally speaking, Southern Tier is absolutely killing it with their Pumking Ale. (What more could we ask for?) But there may come a time in the season when you feel like kicking it up a notch. We’re happy to report after a few nights of R & D, that our local bartenders have plenty of brilliant concoctions to satisfy your needs. Some add to the ale, some top the ale and some swap the ale for a fall cocktail all together. Either way, you’re in for a treat. Drool on!

Vanilla Pumking Pie

Where: HandleBar Pub

What’s in it?: Southern Tier Pumking Ale with a shot of Stoli Vanilla and a cinnamon-sugar rim

If you’re looking for a fall cocktail/beer cocktail that’s strong and sweet, you’ve found it in the Vanilla Pumking Pie at HandleBar. The bartender Alex told us that at first he was unsure about the cinnamon sugar rim, but couldn’t help it. “It’s so on point,” he said during our visit.  He’s right, it is. The added spice complements the beer and the vanilla liquor makes you feel like you’re not actually drinking a beer at all. If you like vanilla, this one is a must have.

Tip: We didn’t see this option listed anywhere inside the bar, so be sure to ask the bartender for it before the Pumking kegs run dry.

Sleepy Hollow

Where: HandleBar Pub

What’s in it?: 3/4 Southern Tier Pumking + 1/4 Southern Tier Double Milk Stout with a cinnamon-sugar rim

Since it’s made primarily of the same ingredient as the first beer cocktail, you might find yourself thinking they’ll taste similar. You’d be very wrong. If the milk stout stays on top of the Pumking like it’s “supposed to” you’ll have a double layered beer. (This is harder than it sounds thanks to the weight of the stout.) If the stout mixes with the Pumking, you’ll find yourself with a dark, rich cocktail with the deep flavor of a stout and the light nature of an ale. (See above photo.) The sweet rim takes in to the next level. If you’re looking for a fall cocktail sans liquor, go for this guy. It’s absolutely delicious and also not listed on any menus at the HandleBar, so make sure to ask about it!

Tip: If you’re craving a fall drink at some random bar, check to see if they have these two Southern Tier brews on tap. If they do, ask the bartender to whip one up for you, minus the rim.

Where Eagles Dare

Where: Winfield’s Pub

What’s in it?: Eagle Rare Bourbon with Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters, homemade butternut sage syrup and a caramel brittle garnish

If spiced rum and butternut sage syrup doesn’t scream autumn, I don’t know what does. Add some bourbon, nutty bitters and a sweet stick of caramel and you’ve got yourself a meal. Especially if you include the free, house-made chips staring at your from their spot on the bar. If you’re a dark liquor fan, and even if you’re not, I urge you to give this Winfield’s original a go.

Tip: Another delicious sounding, fallish cocktail on Winfield’s list is the Phosphene Dream made with Fernet, Deep Eddy Cranberry Vodka, lime juice and Standard Cider Company True Believer Apple Cider. Bring a friend, try both.

mes-que-still-ballin-2

Still Ballin’

Where: Mes Que

What’s in it?: Pumpkin beer, rye whiskey, maple syrup, apple brandy and raw egg

Our server recommended this cocktail from Mes Que’s long list of “Fall Libations”. The ingredients come together to create a sort of light eggnog-like consistency with a layer of foam to top it off. Hints of whiskey come through and as a whole, the drink is well balanced with a touch of sweetness from the maple syrup and sprinkle of nutmeg.

Tip: Don’t be scared of the raw egg. It’s worth it.

Nightmare Before Christmas

Where: Buffalo Proper

What’s in it?: Osocalis Brandy, Matahari Sbsinthe, Owls Brew tea syrup, Southern Tier Pumking Ale and fresh lemon.

This tall drink garnished with a pair of eyes is made up of a small portion of Pumking Ale compared to others on this list. What really struck me about this drink was the Owls Brew tea syrup which incorporates a refreshing, almost earthy flavor. This fall cocktail was very light and enjoyable.

Tip: We saw mention of this Halloween inspired cocktail on the Buffalo Proper Facebook, but it wasn’t on any menu when we visited. Make sure to inquire with a bartender.
