I have been to Ichiban several times in the past, and I have to say, it is consistently delicious. My most recent visit was no exception. The seafood is always fresh and flavorful and the service is attentive without being excessive, which is nice. They offer several booths, some tables and a bar area where you can observe sushi being rolled. I have to say, rolling sushi is quite an art form. I mean, have you ever attempted it yourself? It’s tough.
Food: I like my sushi with a little spice and some crunch (tempura for any sushi newbies out there), so I ordered 2 rolls, Spicy Crunchy Tuna & Spicy Crunchy Crab for $6.95 (lunch special, or get 3 for $9.95). These are both a seafood-tempura mix and are excellent, especially for the price. This lunch special came with miso soup which I love but this time I decided to substitute a house salad for $1; lettuce topped with ginger dressing. If you like ginger at all, this is right up your alley. I can never get enough sushi, no matter the time of day, and therefore I ordered an Ichiban Special Roll called the “Crazy Tuna Roll: Pepper tuna, avocado roll topped with spicy tuna and crunchy.” As you can tell, I’m a tuna freak. These 3 rolls were more than enough to take some home.
My partner in crime on this Friday afternoon chose the “Lunch Box”, a bang for your buck type of lunch special. Choose a main dish, Chicken Teriyaki or Negimaki, (or Beef, Shrimp, Salmon, Tofu, or Veggie) or Chicken or Pork Katsu, OR Shrimp, Chicken or Veggie Tempura. So as you can see you have your work cut out for you on that decision, good luck with that. Along with that you get miso soup, the house salad, gyoza (2 dumplings) & a California roll.
My companion chose Chicken Teriyaki and enjoyed every last bite. The dumplings were crispy and had a lot of flavor. The moist chicken came laid upon a stir-fry of vegetables. The California roll was also a success, however if your looking at ordering sushi, I would always recommend trying the rolls with seafood. You never know unless you try it! And if you don’t like it, ask for some spicy mayo and cover it up with that wonderful taste. (Order the spicy mayo anyways) The “Lunch Box” price varies depending on the main dish, but they all hover around $8.
Scene: Quiet & relaxed, not full but there were tables filled with couples or small groups grabbing a quick bite.
Service: Attentive & precise
Beverages: Wine list, Cold & Hot Sake, small Japanese Beer List
Final thoughts: All in all, its a nice relaxing atmosphere with friendly, helpful service and tastey food. In the past I’ve tried the Christmas Roll, which is pretty intricate, as are most of the Ichiban Special Rolls and I’ve heard the seaweed salad is excellent. Next time I’m going for the Tartar.
