That’s right, we said the magic word: free. While there’s tons going on in Buffalo & Western New York these days, there’s nothing like an awesome free event – one that’s really worth your time and would probably even be worth your money if necessary. If you’re looking for admission fees, hit the road because you won’t find ’em here. These are 10 of WNY’s Top Free Events in May.

 

1. Allentown First Friday

May 2 in Allentown

This self guided gallery tour brings out the best in Allentown. Wander through galleries, restaurants and businesses to find a variety of art, artists, music, performances and food!

2. Buffalo Bike Party

May 2 in Allentown

This party is the first ever of it’s kind in BFLO. Grab some discounted drinks in Allentown before heading out on a mystery ride of sorts around town with fellow biking friends. All you need is your bike & yourself!

3. Smelt Festival

May 2 at Water Street Landing

Join Lewiston as they celebrate a natural resource with tons of free battered smelt and live music on the waterfront.

4. Roswell Park Fundraiser

May 2 at Buffalo Iron Works

If you haven’t stopped by Buffalo Iron Works since it’s been open, tonight is the night. Of course there will be food & drinks but you’ll also find good music and the opportunity to benefit brain tumor & cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

5. Sinthesis 2014

May 3 at Hi-Temp Fab

The art at Sinthesis is a display of work by graduating UB students in the Department of Visual Studies. The Hi-Temp Warehouse is a work of art in and of itself – if you like industrial warehouse settings. #stepoutbuffalo This event is begging you to come, enjoy, and spend zippo dinero for some interesting art in a cool place you probably haven’t visited before.

6. Food Truck Tuesdays

Tuesdays in May

Opening day for FTT this year is May 6. The weather may be a concern of yours, but when the weather’s not perfect you have the best food options (less possibility of trucks selling out). When the weather is good, well then FTT really is the perfect event! Grab a lawn chair or plop down on the grass and enjoy the live music, people watching and some of the best food in Buffalo!

7. Food Truck Rodeo

May 7 at Buffalo History Museum

The first Wednesday of May brings all kinds of food trucks to the Buffalo History Museum for a round up of local food, brews & music. The name of the event may focus on the food, but most importantly, the museum offers free admission from 5pm-8pm!

8. Saturday Artisan Market

May 17 at Canalside

This handcrafted market set in Buffalo’s waterfront offers a changing assortment of approximately 30 artists and artisans. Shop around for a wide range of goods available including glass, pottery, fiber arts, stationery, woodcrafts, purses, soaps, jewelry, toys, candles, and more. This is one of the best ways to enjoy the fancy new Canalside area.

9. Spring Porchfest

May 17 in Elmwood Village

Porches all over the Elmwood Village host local musicians and bands for an afternoon of wandering, listening and celebrating music in the community. Who doesn’t love a free festival!

10. Roycroft Book Club

May 25 at The Roycroft Inn

If discussing literature is a passion of yours, there’s no better place to do it than in a beautiful setting like the Roycroft. Throughout the year the club reads contemporary bestsellers and historical non-fiction culminating in a discussion at the Roycroft Power House. Whether book clubs are your thing or it’s all new to you, this is a fantastic way to Step Out.
