We’re not short on drinking holidays here in Western New York, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t ready to go every time the next one rolls around. Speaking of, it’s about time to clean out your stein and put it to good use at these local German celebrations! Extra points for lederhosen and dirndls. Prost!

When is Oktoberfest?

In Germany Oktoberfest is celebrated from September 19 – October 4, 2015. Here in WNY the themed celebrations occur between September 12 – October 3, 2015.

 

Hamburg Oktoberfest 9/12

Memorial Park in Hamburg, NY

At this German festival expect authentic food, fantastic German beer poured by the cup, stein or pitcher, Riesling, music dancing and a car show – all German of course. This event has free admission.

Bisonfest 2015 9/12

Flying Bison Brewery in Buffalo, NY

This Bavaria-style celebration of the arrival of fall involves turning the brewery into a German beer hall. Only Flying Bison’s German style beers will be served. Admission includes a Bisonfest mug, three drink tokens, German music by “The Frankfurters”, and an entree and a side fish from 716 Club House’s German Grill. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door.

Schlachtfest 9/13

Spring Garden in Marilla, NY

Kick off the Oktoberfest season in a truly authentic way at Spring Garden with Schlachtfest. There will be delicious German food, music by Auslanders, and some good ol’ German beer. Admission is $6 per person.

Oktoberfest Kickoff Party 9/17

Templeton Landing in Buffalo, NY

Templeton Landing isn’t taking their Oktoberfest celebration lightly this year. Grab your leiderhosen and join the party any time from 9/17 – 10/4. Their kickoff party on 9/17 will include German Beer, “Buffalo’s Big German Band”, food specials, games and festivities. Rumor has it, they even have German lawn games. Free admission!

Oinktoberfest 9/18 – 9/20

The Great Pumpkin Farm in Clarence, NY

Okay, so this one isn’t exacly an authentic Oktoberfest celebration, but we couldn’t resist including it thanks to their oh-so-clever name. Oinktoberfest is actually an annual celebration of an All American Cuisine – you guessed it, BBQ. This three-day extravaganza consists of cooking contests including The Whole Hog Contest, eating, drinking and live entertainment. BBQ vendors include One Eyed Jacks, Desperados BBQ, Butts & Links BBQ, Big Belly BBQ, and J & L Boulevard BBQ.

Oktoberfest 9/19

The Cobblestone District in Buffalo, NY

This Oktoberfest celebration in the Cobblestone District offers traditional German fare from LagerHaus 95, beer from Hofbrau, music and dancing with The German-American Musicians “Buffalo’s BIG German Band!” & Die Auslanders. A portion of the proceeds benefit The German-American Musicians Association. Tickets are $5 at the door. Did we mention there will be free parking and a heated tent?

This new pop up restaurant is serving up their second dinner German-style. The menu ($40 per person) includes 4 courses, each paired with wine or cocktails. Yum!!

OFest! Harvest March Parade and Celebration 10/4

Gene McCarthy’s in the Old First Ward, South Buffalo

Join in on a march through the streets of the Old First Ward with a ceremonial cask of Ofest followed by a blessing and tapping. There will be German music, a Stein Hoist Competition, $12 German Plates all day and a free pint with your name on it! (Name on pint not actually included.)

Previously known as “Oktoberfest”, this fall festival in Ellicottville features the one aspect of Oktoberfest celebrations we know and love – drinking. It’s not all that German but hey, it’s a WNY tradition and we love it.
