Pictured is 467 Virginia Street, located in the historic Allentown District. Built in 1894 at over 6,700 square feet in the French Chateau style, it was originally the home of E.F. Hall, a well-known portrait photographer in Buffalo. A native of New Hampshire, E.F. relocated to Buffalo in 1887, where he opened his photography studio, E.F. Hall & Co., on Main Street. Upon the completion of his new home, he relocated his studio here, which at the time had the address of 469 Virginia. A story on E.F.’s work appeared in the Buffalo Courier on November 17, 1901. An excerpt read: “The portraits of many of the most prominent people not only of Buffalo, but of Western New York are seen here, for it is a well-known fact that Mr. Hall has done much to popularize art photography in this vicinity, being almost the first photographer here who made a specialty of not only correct likenesses, but photographs that were really works of art. His ability in this class of work has attracted a large patronage of a class of people who appreciate fine work, and as a consequence he has taken rank among the foremost artists in this city.” E.F. sold the home and studio for $27,000 in 1908 to another local photographer, Howard Beach, but he continued to operate there with Beach as Hall’s Photographic Studios until his death in 1913. #buffalo #buffalony #historyofbuffalo #buffalohistory #buffalony #buffalove #photography #hashtagstepoutbuffalo #viewbuffalo #igersbuffalo
