As Buffalonians, time spent indoors on sunny, hot summer days is time wasted. And frankly, we want less of it. So we’re on a mission to broaden your patio experiences. Here’s a list of the newest outdoor spaces to enjoy around town. #patiolife

Allen Burger Venture / Step Out Buffalo
Allen Burger Venture
Allentown / Downtown
Good For: Beer lovers, Burger lovers, lunch, dinner, drinks
Tip: These guys are on our #SOBFoodBucketList Challenge!
If you love beer and/or (amazing) burgers and you want to sit outside in the heart of Buffalo, ABV is all you. They even have a bike valet available for just $6 which includes a can of beer. Genius! This probably goes without saying, but it can be kind of difficult to snag a table on their relatively small patio. Sitting inside isn’t the worst thing, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Ballyhoo / Step Out Buffalo
Ballyhoo
Old First Ward / South Buffalo, Downtown (We can’t make up our minds)
Good for:Â Snack, Lunch, Casual dinner, Drinks, Night out, Lake night eats
Tip: These guys are on our #SOBFoodBucketList Challenge!
Ballyhoo has been around for about a year now, but their patio is pretty fresh (in more ways than one). Newly added off the back of their building, in true Ballyhoo style it’s simple yet undeniably cool. Thankfully it offers added space for when the bar gets swamped with jam-loving millennials (us included).

Black Sheep / Photo from Black Sheep’s Facebook
Black Sheep
West Side / Downtown
Good For: Sunday brunch, Dinner, Date night
Tip: These guys are on our #SOBFoodBucketList Challenge!
Black Sheep’s patio offers a quiet space for a romantic dinner date or a sunny Sunday brunch. Everything tastes better outside, especially the farm-focused menu coming from the Gedras’ kitchen. Have we mentioned their outstanding brunch?

Black Swan / Photo from Black Swan’s Facebook
Black Swan
Allentown / Downtown
Good For:Â Drinks
Black Swan’s new patio brings the lounge vibe they’ve become known for to the great outdoors. The large space (basically the size of two patios) offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy a summer night in Allentown while sipping on cocktails. Added bonus: the people watching. This just in – we heard they no longer have food. Might want to call and check.

Buffalo Proper / Photo from Buffalo Proper’s Facebook
Buffalo Proper
Theater District / Downtown
Good For: Cocktails, Dinner
Tip: These guys are on our #SOBFoodBucketList Challenge!
While you may have had a few chances to check out Buffalo Proper’s balcony patio last summer, we feel it’s still green enough to get a shout out here. Stop by for a great view of an underrated, quiet(er) part of the city and some fantastic food and drinks. You really can’t go wrong.

Gene McCarthy’s / Photo from Gene McCarthy’s Facebook
Gene McCarthy’s
Old First Ward / South Buffalo
73 Hamburg St, Buffalo, NY / (716) 855-8948
Good For: Lunch, Dinner, Drinks, Late Night
On the older side of “new”, but still worth a mention in our opinion is the beer garden at Gene McCarthy’s in the Old First Ward. It’s complete with a “living wall”, bike rack, picnic tables, window service, and house-made beer.

Hydraulic Hearth / Step Out Buffalo
Hydraulic Hearth
Larkinville / Downtown
Good For: Drinks, Dinner, Brunch, Hanging out, Big groups, Happy Hour
Tip: These guys are on our #SOBFoodBucketList Challenge!
The “patio” to end all patios. We say “patio” because it’s also been classified as a beer garden in the past (minor details). The fact is, Hydraulic Hearth’s outdoor space is many things to many people. They’ve got shuffleboard, lazy day furniture, a bar, a pergola, food trucks coming and going, house-made shandies, Community Beer Works beer brewed on site, wood-fired pizza, craft cocktails, a view of Larkin Square, and more. Like we said, the “patio” to end all patios.

Mac’s on Hertel / Step Out Buffalo
Mac’s on Hertel
Hertel / North Buffalo
1435 Hertel Ave, Buffalo, NY / (716) 833-6227
Good For: Lunch, Dinner, Casual date night
Macs’ double decker patio offers a great view of Hertel, tasty food and friendly service. Expect plenty of room to sit, eat, and relax. Most likely you’ll walk away falling a little more in love with Hertel Ave if you aren’t there already, especially if you’re there around sunset. For a good time try their “already famous” Buffalo Crunch Rolls.
Marcy Casino’s Thursday Hoppy Hour
Elmwood Village / Downtown
199 Lincoln Pkwy, Buffalo, NY / (716) 886-0088
Certainly the balcony at the Marcy Casino in Delaware Park isn’t exactly new, but their Thursday “Hoppy Hour” Craft Beer Series is, and we feel you should know about it before it’s too late. Every Thursday this summer (ending sometime in Sept) join the party on their patio overlooking Hoyt Lake with a new brewery serving beer every week and a small menu coming off the grill. See, we told you you needed to know. Catch this event on Thursdays from 5 pm – 9 pm for a $5 donation at the door.

Moor Pat / Step Out Buffalo
Moor Pat
Williamsville / Northtowns
78 E Spring St, Williamsville, NY /Â (716) 810-9957
Good for: Casual date night, Snack, Late night eats, Beer lovers, Day drinking
Tip: These guys are on our #SOBFoodBucketList Challenge!
This adorable grassy space next to Moor Pat is more of a beer garden than a patio. If you’re in the Northtowns and looking for a relaxing outdoor hangout with quality food (artisan sausages, hand-cut fries) and drinks (craft beer), look no further. Expect picnic tables, Cornhole, and strung lights. We’re in love.

Providence Social / Photo from Providence Social’s Facebook
Providence Social
West Side / Downtown
490 Rhode Island St, Buffalo, NY / (716) 464-3786
Good For: Brunch, Lunch, Dinner, Happy Hour
This patio made a quick appearance last summer only to get shut down early. But have no fear! Their enclosed, cozy back patio is open for good this year, ready to serve you dinner, drinks, and Saturday and Sunday brunch as you wish.

Public House on the Lake / Step Out Buffalo
Public House on the Lake
Good for: Lunch, Dinner, Drinks, Date Night
In the mood for a view? You can’t go wrong with Public House on the Lake. The whole restaurant has been spruced up since it’s days as Root Five just last summer, and they’re hard at work trying to provide good food and service to the masses (and we mean the masses). As with any waterfront patio, expect to be joined by many other Buffalonians out looking for the perfect place to enjoy the sun.

The Ward at RiverWorks / Step Out Buffalo
The Ward @ RiverWorks
Good for: Drinks, Dinner, People watching
This brand-spankin-new patio overlooks (read: practically on top of) the Buffalo River. There’s plenty of room to bring all your friends and stay a while, watching everything from boaters and kayakers to paddle boarders and water bikers pass by. If you’re hoping to get a full “New Buffalo” experience from your patio outing, this is the gem you want right here.

Sterling Tap & Wurst / Step Out Buffalo
Sterling Tap and Wurst
Good For: Snack, Beer lovers, Hertel Ave people watching (you know it’s a thing)
New this summer on Hertel Avenue in the former Sterling Tavern space, Sterling Tap and Wurst’s sidewalk patio is small but cute and perfect for a happy hour stop in North Buffalo. Beer and odd-ball sausage is the name of the game here, so if you’re not into that, you might want to look elsewhere.

716 Food and Sport / Step Out Buffalo
716 Food &Â Sport
Canalside / Downtown
Good For: Before/after Canalside, Lunch, Dinner
Have you been wanting to check out 716 but couldn’t bring yourself to sit inside on a nice sunny day? Problem solved. They now have a new sidewalk patio out front, just a stones throw away from everything going on at Canalside. Enjoy a Buffalo themed meal on their patio then head over to the boardwalk for ice cream at Clinton’s Dish and a walk along the water. Make sure to call ahead to see if they are allowing alcoholic beverages outside yet!
