Western New Yorkers love their pizza almost as much as they love their wings. Here at Step Out Buffalo we’ve recruited (read exploited) a self-proclaimed pizza expert. This college sophomore agreed to sample many of the Buffalo area most popular pies and give us his insights. Yes, free pizza was a large part of the compensation.
Granted- everyone has their favorites, their own personal preferences – thin, chewy, sweet, cheesy. The choices, and probably pizzerias, are as plentiful as the days of the year. Pizza 365…maybe next year. We stuck to the basics- cheese and pepperoni, full pie, tested immediately. We did order some smalls and half pizzas when possible. Some are larges. We don’t think that matters here.
One man’s opinion with a few tidbits thrown in. Take it for what it’s worth.
On the 28th day of this cheesy journey (FEB 28), we will give you our top 5 Cheese and Pepperoni Pizza’s in WNY – in order. Who will be the winner? Stay tuned! See updates below, daily.

Day #30: Brunner’s Eatery
Brunner’s Eatery is a lot more than just a pizza place. Walk in, have a seat in the casual dining area or grab take out, but whatever you do, get a baron bomber…
Day #29: Pi Craft
SOB visited Pi Craft in December soon after it opened, so we are familiar with the Pizza style “Chipotle concept”. Like Crust Pizza Bar, the idea is creating your own pizza as you walk down the line, picking fresh ingredients as toppings. It’s highly customizable, but regrettably I had to stick to the plan once again – cheese and pepperoni…
Day #28: Buzzy’s NY Style Pizza
Buzzy’s pizza in Niagara Falls came recommended by quite a few people, so I was eager to check it out. The place is nice, parking, sit down and eat or take out, patio seating for another time (entirely). The pizza wasn’t exactly what I was expecting…
Day #27: Sammy’s Pizzeria
Next on the list was Sammy’s, recommended by a friend that frequents the area. Let me tell you – this was a killer recommendation…
Day #26: Crust Pizza Bar
Crust Pizza Bar is one of the newest pizza places in WNY. It’s conceptually different from your average grab and go joint. Although you can still grab and go. It’s probably a quicker option and definitely more personal – in size and customization…
Day #25: Zips-Wiseguys Pizza
Zips-Wiseguys (honestly not really sure of their actual name) is located on Hertel in North Buffalo. There’s nothing fancy to it, just a counter for pick up…
Day #24: Julie’s Pizzeria
I hate to say it, but I forgot to take a picture again. This time it’s pretty bad because I can’t even find any on their website to give you the gist. So you’ll have to just take my word for it I guess….
Day #23: Prima Pizza Pasta
Prima Pizza Pasta has your average pizza place Italian menu. This was my first time there. The pizza, as you can see in the picture looks very good – almost like the perfect pie…
Day #22: Pasquale’s
West Seneca, Derby & East Aurora
Pasquale’s is just seriously good pizza. Each of the three locations is actually a well-run Italian restaurant with large menus and plenty of pizza to choose from…
Day #21: Bocce Club
I’ve heard Bocce has the best pizza in WNY. I’ve heard it too many times to count. It was by far the most recommended place to visit by our readers. There was much anticipation to say the least…
Day #20: Zetti’s Pizza & Pasta
As I recall, Zetti’s used to have 3 locations and are now down to just the one near UB North. Their pizza is very thin crusted unlike most in WNY. This wasn’t the first time we’ve forgotten…
Day #19: Edies Pizza
Edie’s used to be a small operation right in the village of Hamburg. They have since expanded to include a small eat in dining room – the place looks good. (Many of Hamburg’s pizzerias are take out only aside…
Day #18: LaPorta’s
Residing in Williamsville, LaPorta’s is up against some pretty well liked pizza joints in the North Towns. They cook their pizzas right on…
Day #17: Romeo & Juliet’s
Hertel, Williamsville, Tonawanda
Romeo & Juliet’s have several locations, none of which are close to my house in the South Towns, unfortunately. (I have heard they were looking at places in Hamburg recently.) They make some seriously authentic Italian food…
Day #16: Dough Bois
Dough Bois is a small joint in Downtown Buffalo with some dine in seating and of course, take out. We decided to visit here based on…
Day #15: Brick Oven Bistro & Deli
Brick Oven Bistro has a, well, brick oven! Which makes for some darn good pizza. They also have a nice restaurant and nice menu…
Day #14: Cappelli’s Pizzeria
Cappelli’s is definitley known as a South Town favorite. Hold on, a side note …
Day #13: Leonardi’s Pizzeria
Leonardi’s was by far one of the top recommendations our readers gave us. It seems they cannot stop raving about it. I love the enthusiasm and share it 100 percent…
Day #12: Joe’s NY Style Pizza
Joe’s is pretty much the only pizzeria on our list that calls them self “NY Style”. They claim to be an authentic New York Style Italian Restaurant. The pizza is…
Day #11: Imperial Pizza
Imperial is located on Abbott Road in South Buffalo. It came highly recommended, so I was excited to try it. Clearly – I forgot to take a photo, ate a piece…
Day #10: Casa-di-Pizza
I stuck to the plan – cheese and pepperoni pizza, and I wish I hadn’t.
Day #9: Ilio DiPalos
Ilio’s has been a WNY favorite for decades. Pizza is just one of the many things they do, including other italian foods, banquets, the whole nine…
Day #8: Metro Pizza Co.
Metro Pizza Co. on Clinton is a tiny little place packin’ some big flavor. They offer the usual pizza place menu – pizza, subs, fingers, wings & tacos, and take out only. I know from experience, their subs are delicious & taste extra fresh…
Day #7: Mister Pizza
Mister Pizza sits on Elmwood, with a menu that includes the pizza place “ushh”. One thing that brightened my day from the start?…
Day #6: Pizza Plant
Pizza Plant is an “Italian Pub” offering a range of pastas, pizza, subs, etc. It seems like a nice neighborhood place with quite a few beers on tap at the bar and a sizable gluten free menu on specific nights.
Day #5: Angie’s Pizza House
Angie’s resides in Black Rock on Niagara Street. This was your average pizza. The crust/dough was not all that…
Day #4: Elm Street Bakery
Elm Street has quite a few appetizing pies to choose from. Starting to regret my limitations on toppings, I made a mental note to come back and try the Steak & Bleu pizza. Damn, that sounds good.
Day #3: Big Fat Paulie’s
Big Fat Paulie’s in South Buffalo was a last minute decision to add to our list. I had heard little about it, but what I had heard sounded good…
Day #2: Penora’s
Penora’s is not just a take out pizza joint. You can stay, sit, have some fish fry. I think I even saw a Maryland Crab Cake Sandwich on the menu…
Day #1: La Nova
Buffalo & Williamsville
La Nova was the first place I visited. Being from the South Towns, this was my first time. And hopefully won’t…
