Spring is finally here. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, THE BABY SPIDERS ARE HATCHING, the flowers are blooming. And if you’re overcoming a case of cabin fever from winter, the road trips are being planned. One of Buffalo’s many many great qualities is its close proximity to other great cities, thus making it a central hub for fun road trips. Day-trips, weekend-trips, long-weekend trips, they’re all just a short drive away… and one of our favorite places to venture is Rochester, NY.
Fun fact: I lived in Rochester for 6 years while attending both undergrad and graduate school at RIT (#gotigers) and in that time I got to do a LOT of exploring. The Flower City has tons to do during any trip –more on that later– but ESPECIALLY a girls’ trip. Mother’s Day, the first nice weekend of the year, Memorial Day, Labor Day, just because it’s been too long since you’ve all gotten together – Rochester is a pretty cool road trip destination. Whether you’re making a day or a weekend out of it there’s no shortage of things to do just a few miles east, and one of the most fun things to do with your gal pals in Rochester is shopping at the Eastview Mall. Here’s our top 4 reasons why:
1. It’s really not as far as you think
Located about an hour from Downtown Buffalo and close to/on the way to lots of great destinations, the Eastview Mall couldn’t be more convenient (FYI, it’s exit 45 on the thruway, here are directions). Going to The Finger Lakes? Spending the day on Lake Ontario? Hitting up the Canandaigua wine trail? Visiting your alma mater? Checking out the Lilac Festival (or any of their other zillion festivals)? Getting learnt at the George Eastman Museum? Saying hi to Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass at Mount Hope Cemetery? Getting your garbage plate fix? Whatever the reason and whenever the season it’s always a good time to go explore our neighboring city, and a shopping trip at the Eastview is the icing on the cake.
PS: with Buffalo Bills Training Camp so close by it’s not uncommon to see some of your favorite current and former players shopping at Eastview for new duds during their downtime. Whaddup Fred Ex!
2. The Eastview Mall is a shopper’s ~paradise~
This shopping mecca is 1,300,000 square feet filled with 170+ stores, many of which you can’t find anywhere else. Athleta, Brooks Brothers, LL Bean, Lego, Madewell, TUMI, and Von Maur all call the Eastview home… and so does the pianist who plays all day for your listening pleasure inside Von Maur. I have personally spent 10+ hours in a single day shopping all the shops and living the dream at Eastview Mall and trust me when I say it was amazing. And if you didn’t make a face at the thought of a 10-hour shopping day 1) we would be great friends and 2) many hotels near the Eastview Mall offer Shop and Stay Packages so you can easily get some beauty rest after a full day of upping your wardrobe game… and enjoy some free wine, snacks, gift cards, and swag bags too.
3. It’s an experience
My mom, my friends, and basically anyone I’ve ever met with the slightest interest in shopping was immediately taken to the Eastview Mall. Shopping at Eastview truly is an experience like no other, and if you’re looking for that Real Housewives of Rochester feeling (aren’t we all?) look no further. We’re talking the full monty of a glamorous shopping experience including everything from a carousel in the food court to a fireplace near Von Maur to high-quality restaurants (even their “fast food” is top-notch…helloooooooo Nathan’s!).
Plus every time I go there’s a sea of luxury cars just waiting for SOMEONE (Kristen Wiig? Alec Baldwin? Tyson Beckford? Taye Diggs? Jenna Marbles? Pandora Boxx?) to step out of. One time I saw a Lamborghini *and* a Ferrari parked out front and we spent all of dinner speculating whose they could’ve been. One time she met John Stamos on a plane…and he told her she was pretty. Wait what if it was John Stamos’?
On the (long) list of our favorite things, “free events” is definitely in the top ten. And combine all of the above with free events AT A MALL? Girl hi. At any given time there is more than likely a free event of some sort happening over at the the Eastview Mall. One of the most popular events is Super Saturdays which take place on the last Saturday of each month. These events are geared towards families and attract hundreds of people with themes ranging from ‘Fairy Gardens’ to ‘Aerial Adventures’.
If you’re looking for a sans-child event and have a taste for the outdoors, L.L. Bean offers free/cheap classes pretty much every day that teach you everything you need to know to become the next Bear Grylls (or at least survive camping trips this summer). Hiking, fly-casting, kayaking, trail running, and paddle boarding along with other useful things like tick identification and prevention, adventure travel essentials, and smartphone photography for the outdoors helloooo Instagram! are just some of the classes offered. There are few other places that are within easy road-tripping distance to as many other cool cities as Buffalo, and as firm believers of stepping out (get it?) we highly recommend everyone takes full advantage of this proximity and makes the trip to Ra-cha-cha. Plus with Mother’s Day, springtime, Memorial Day, summer, and back to school shopping (sorry but it’s true) all around the corner there’s no better time to explore our surroundings and try something new…in something new…that you just bought at one of the 170+ stores at the Eastview Mall. One time I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and flip flops from the Eastview Mall. So I bought army pants and flip flops from the Eastview Mall.
