Put Your Money Where Your Mouth is Buffalo
For those of you that need a refresher, this is how Mercado puts it in one sentence:
Curated by an amazing chef, Mercado will create a central hub for Western New York artisanal foods and upscale casual dining, bringing over 15 distinctive dining options – chef- and artisan-operated – under one roof for the first time in local history.
Read more about their initial announcements in our first article and our follow up.
Mercado is in the early stages of what will hopefully one day be a destination for food lovers of Buffalo and beyond. Their plan is to create a beautiful space that allows for a curation of differences – cuisines, styles, prices and experiences. Jeremy Horwitz and team have recently announced a few of the names we can expect to see involved in Mercado; Lloyd Taco Trucks, Lake Effect Ice Cream, Bavarian Nut Company & The Pasta Peddler. In addition, Jeremy told us that one of the shops will remain a secret until it exists and can be experienced by all. Hint: It will be named Luna. In short, their plan is to build something that you, a WNY supporter (near or far) want to see happen. And so do we.
Building something great like Mercado is not easy, but it’s a hell of a lot easier when we help each other out. Mountainous undertakings become more realistic as friends and supporters join in your efforts – for their own good and for the good of the community. Mercado’s team needs your support, our support, in making this future Buffalo treasure a reality.
A little about the Kickstarter campaign: The Mercado team’s goal is to raise $150,00 by Friday, April 4. The campaign began on February 25, 2014 and the team has been updating backers daily on the progress of this revolution. If you decide to back Mercado on Kickstarter, you will be billed at the end of the campaign when Mercado has reached the full $150,000 goal. As I write this, supporters have so far pledged over $53,000 and counting. You can see why your help is important – it’s not too late. There are plenty of reasons why you should consider backing Mercado, and quickly. Mercado’s Kickstarter campaign runs out in 6 days. This is your chance to help – Mercado & WNY.
Why You Should Back Mercado Immediately
1. Outstanding Backer Rewards
The first thing everyone needs to consider is that when you become a backer, you are buying something awesome! Jeremy & team are not asking you to just hand over your hard earned money and bet on their dream. They want you to do that WHILE enjoying one or more of the following:
- Mercado T-shirt
- Mercado hat
- 3 gourmet coffee drinks
- Breakfast or lunch
- Mercado carrying bag
- A spot at their exclusive soft opening
- Beverage Theory Class by Sommelier, Food Director & Chef Scott Kollig (HINT! This will be better than you can imagine)
- Dinner at Mercado before the general public
- An “incredible Mercado-assembled tasting menu for 2 including dinner and drinks curated by Scott”
- Grand Tour with snack and drink stops at the Mercado 15
- Modernest cooking classes taught by none other than…Chef Scott Kollig
- A tasting dinner for 8, 10 by Chef Scott Kollig
- A private party using the entire Mercado space
Keep in mind that this is a Chef that has worked in some of the best restaurants in the country, educating you, serving you, creating works of art for your mouth. Why wouldn’t you want any of these things? Seems like a no brainer. Go to their Kickstarter Campaign, read the descriptions for yourself and make the decision to back them.
2. Retaining Talent in WNY
The simple fact is that we need more talented people to stay in the Buffalo area. Mercado plans to help WNY do just that. Western New Yorkers will have a place to grow as chefs and entrepreneurs. Mercado will become a great example of what can be done here. Not to mention, we need to retain the talent of Mercado’s team. I’ve been told that educating and building talent is one of Chef Scott’s priorities. Do you want them leaving and making some other city super great? I don’t think so. Supporting Mercado & the team will be good for all of us.
3. Put Your Money Where your Mouth Is
Almost everyone has complained about Buffalo/WNY at some point. We need this, we need that, why not do this here or there. I do it myself, therefore I get that there is more to it than quitting your job and finding a way to recreate the beaches of Barcelona along the Buffalo waterfront. However, this is your chance to put your money where your mouth is. It’s my chance too. If you believe that Buffalo could use a Mercado in our midst, BACK IT. Back what you believe, back Mercado, back the revolution. They are doing the work, taking on the risks, all you have to do is support their efforts by essentially buying something from them before they open.
4. Become Immortalized on Mercado’s Community Wall
When you choose to back Mercado on Kickstarter, your name will be added to the list of backers on the Community Wall at Mercado (depending on level). Self explanatory. How cool is that? Plus they tweet at you!
5. You’re Backing Your Own Adventure
Lastly and most importantly, if and when Mercado is standing (hopefully on a street in Downtown Buffalo), we will have the ultimate food destination right here in WNY. Markets are simply the best way to eat. Wandering from booth to booth, picking out bites of foods you feel like trying that day is one of the best experiences. Every mercado I’ve been to has left me longing to return, each bite an adventure. The openness and wandering nature of a mercado allows you to explore different cuisines and styles within a cozy community. It’s just great. I promise.
There are plenty more reasons why you should back Mercado. Support your community, support these entrepreneurs trying to create something, trying to support existing businesses in WNY. Back Mercado because you want to see new food and drink techniques used around the world – in Buffalo. Back them because you or your kids might have the desire to learn from great chefs in the future. Or because you would love to have a place to grab a quick lunch, a unique drink, an outstanding breakfast or a mind blowing dessert. Support Mercado because you are excited about Buffalo’s future.
