Genesee Country Village & Museum is open this summer, Thursday through Sunday, and is all about relaxation and exploration in wide open, outdoor spaces. This largest living history museum in all of New York State has the biggest collection of historic buildings in the Northeast with interpreters demonstrating historical trades, crafts, and cooking every day. But wait – there’s more! There’s also a Nature Center with over five miles of hiking trails and the John L. Wehle Gallery featuring new art, artifact, and fashion exhibits for 2020.

1. A Novel Weekend
Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Love the classics? This weekend might be your dream come true as you explore the literary world of the 1800s through the imaginations of well-known authors and prose from beloved stories. Think Little House on the Prairie, Alice in Wonderland, Little Women, and more. Attend a “Mad Tea Party,” play Queen’s croquet, take dancing or writing lessons with the March sisters, and visit the Pioneer Farm and listen to fiddle tunes just like Pa Ingalls used to play.

2. Kids FREE Days in August
Thursdays, August 6, 13, 20, and 27, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
GCV&M welcomes kids ages 12 and under for free on Thursdays in August! There will be plenty of fun activities in the Historic Village, including tours with the animals on the farm, demonstrations from the potter and the tinsmith, and games on the Village Square. Visitors can also visit the Wehle Gallery to see new exhibits or hike the trails at the Nature Center. Lunch and ice cream are available at the Depot Restaurant and don’t forget to stop at the Flint Hill Store for a souvenir or special gift!
3. Summer Sunset Series
Friday, August 7 and Friday, August 21 – 5 to 9 p.m.
The picturesque Great Meadow with its beautiful historic gazebo is a well-known sight at GCV&M. Enjoy this rare opportunity to relax here after hours with good food, fun music, and cold beverages! The Freight House Pub will be open for drinks and the Depot Restaurant will be open for dinner, snacks, and ice cream. Outdoor and deck seating will be available, so bring a chair or blanket and come enjoy the sunset vibes.

4. Celebrating Chocolate Weekend
Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Chocolate lovers won’t want to miss this sweet celebration. There will be all sorts of tasty treats and demonstrations, including chocolate-dipped jumbles, chocolate cake, coconut macaroons with chocolate drizzle, and more. Plus, you’ll get to take home a tasting box of historic and modern morsels which will include Shaker Chocolate Pound Cake, Chocolate Shortbread, Chocolate Babka, and Potato Chip Chocolate Clusters…Yum!

5. Music Traditions Weekend
Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Enjoy a weekend of casual music and great food in wide open spaces on the Great Meadow and in the Historic Village. Meander through the Village streets to see and hear musical vignettes inspired by 19-century life in Western NY. Then, pick out the perfect spot – there are so many to choose from – to picnic, relax, and enjoy time with your family and friends.

6. Hop Harvest – Save the Date!
Monday, September 7, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Beer geeks, this one’s for you! Save the date for Hop Harvest and follow the journey of hops from field to brewery to pint glass. This event is your chance to taste and enjoy this last hurrah to summer. The only recreated 19th-century working brewery in the country is located here. You’ll see how brewing was done back in the day. While you’re visiting, taste the first batch of Fat Ox and Stocking Hill Ales brewed by their new partner, Flying Bison Brewery. Both brews are on tap for pints and growlers to take home.
