Did you know? Genesee Country Village & Museum is the largest living history museum in New York.

Many, many years ago history was made here. Today, this recreated historic village, art gallery and museum covers 600 acres, offering endless opportunities to explore the past. Here’s just a few suggestions to get you started!

#1: The Historic Village

From houses to schools and churches to stores and offices, you really feel like you’re traveling back in time. The costumed interpreters bring history to life through stories told in character. As you stroll the village, you’ll progress through three different time periods. With over 68 historic buildings, there’s so much to see here. You can watch demonstrations at the blacksmith shop, smell the aroma of fresh baked goods, and even test your balance on stilts. All in all, you’re in for an immersive historical experience.

#2: John L. Wehle Gallery

The collection here is incredibly diverse, featuring a wide range of sporting, wildlife, and

Western American art from all over the world, spanning the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Plus you’ll see clothing dating all the way back to 1790, including outerwear, underwear, headwear, footwear and accessories. It’s quite the comprehensive collection.

#3: Genesee Country Nature Center

If you’re more of the outdoorsy explorer type, you’ll appreciate the five miles of interpreted woodland and meadow trails. Here you’ll see all sorts of native plants, tree, and wildlife. As you are hiking, you’ll be able to experience a variety of habitats including old-field, deciduous woodland, and woodland edge. Plus, you’ll see fossils and geologic formations. Sounds like a nature lover’s dream come true!

#4: Brewery

Beer geeks, this one’s for you! The only recreated 19th-century working brewery in the country is located here. You’ll see how brewing was done back in the day. Really though. Locally-based CB Craft Brewers actually brews beer according to 19th century techniques, and the results are available to purchase at the Freight House Pub! . How cool is that?

#5: Historic Gardens

Gardening has changed quite a bit over the years. Thanks to the 11 recreated historic gardens, you can get a better idea of what it was like back in the day. From rustic but essential vegetable plots to elegant Victorian garden retreats, you can experience it all.

#6: Special Events

As you’re making plans for the summer, think about making the trip here. There’s a long list of events coming up. Here’s a few to watch for this season.

  • Kids Free Week: June 25-30 – Kick off summer vacation with a trip to Genesee Country Village & Museum. There will be hands-on activities and crafts for kids of all ages.
  • Independence Day Celebration: Thursday, July 4 – Celebrate our nation’s birth with a parade, games, picnics, contests, and a ceremony to swear in some new U.S. citizens.
  • Civil War Encampment Weekend: July 20-21 – Over 800 re-enactors will wage a battle each day right on the grounds.

  • A Novel Weekend – Lewis Carroll: Saturday-Sunday, August 3-4 – This is the museum’s newest event, highlighting 19th-century author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll.
  • Fiddlers’ Fair: Saturday-Sunday, August 17-18 – An extraordinary music experience featuring 100+ musicians on sixstages for a weekend full of entertainment!
  • Hop Harvest Festival: Monday, September 2 – Follow the journey of hops from field to brewery to pint glass. This is your chance to taste and enjoy this last hurrah to summer!
