When we say “Bargain Bites”, we mean it in the BEST way possible. Great food and a fun experience without handing over your left arm. Is that so much to ask? In this first edition we cover places in the Downtown Buffalo area to fill up on a budget! Seriously, eat a Lloyds burrito and you won’t be able to move for 2 hours let alone eat something else.

Lloyd Taco Truck
Known for starting the food truck trend by being the first food truck to serve our city, Lloyd’s set the bar high. Everything from their tricked out nachos to their fresh, slow roasted pork tacos is remarkable. All the ingredients create such powerful blend of flavors that leave you always wanting more. For only $2.59, you can get delicious corn tortillas packed with jack/cheddar cheese, shredded cabbage, chimi sauce, roja sauce, fresh cilantro, lime, and the protein of your choice (slow roasted pork, braised beef, grilled chicken or stewed black beans). You can add Lloyd’s homemade queso to any meal you’d like. Order a burrito for just $6.89 and you’ll be stuffed. It’s a sure bang for your buck. Obviously, Lloyd’s is always on the move, but if you have a twitter, you can follow Lloyd Taco Trucks and their account will tell you where they’re parked, and usually where they’ll be in the near future!

Whenever out-of-towners ask me where they should go for something great to eat, the first place that pops into my head is Pano’s. Pano’s has so many wonderful menu items to choose from, but the best, in my opinion, are the souvlaki dishes – available with chicken, lamb, or steak, all are exceptional. I usually order the lunch portion of the steak souvlaki. You get a generous portion of plump, juicy steak medallions, along with a salad made up of romaine, olives, peppers, onions, peperoncinis, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, and greek dressing and pita. The lunch portion is only about $10 for a large quantity of food that you can easily turn it into 2 meals. You also have the option to get the steak souvlaki in a pita with fries (available with chicken and gyro meat). Panos also has delicious and affordable breakfast options, like the smoked salmon eggs benedict or stuffed french toast. I’m always pleased with everything I order from Pano’s, and with the price.

I tried SATO for the first time during Local Restaurant Week. I ordered the “Sato Ramen” for $14, which has a very generous portion of Sato’s signature ramen that is made from scratch daily with umami rich tonkotsu and torigara (pork & chicken bones), topped with chashu pork, bean sprouts, green onions, bamboo shoots and pickled ginger. The pork was so incredibly tender and juicy. The ramen was fresh and perfectly cooked. If you like a kick, my boyfriend ordered the “Spicy Miso Ramen,” also for $14, which contains tonkotsu (pork) and torigara (chicken) stock infused with our spicy miso mixture, topped with chashu pork, bean sprouts, carrots, and green onion. The broth was just the right amount of heat, so that the dish was spicy, but still had flavor.
Sato also offers a wide variety of Sake, and a great selection of beers. I will absolutely be going back, not only for more of their delicious, homemade ramen, but because they offer a Nickel City cheese plate and sake pairing!
Chef’s found its Buffalo home on Seneca St. back in 1923. The full story about the owner, Lou Billittier, is available on Chef’s website and I encourage you to read it. Who doesn’t love a story about a local youngster growing up & making it in his hometown? At Chefs they make you feel like family and make sure the customers have a great experience at the restaurant. The friendly servers and warm feeling you get when you walk through the doors of Chefs to get a mouthful of their cheesy, spaghetti parmesan makes the experience so much better. You can start with a fresh dandelion salad for only $5.95 followed by your entree choice from a wide variety of Italian dishes Chefs has to offer. If you love cheese, you’ll love the spaghetti parmesan, which comes in extra small for $9.95, small for $10.50, and large for $12.25. You can’t go wrong with anything you order from Chefs and it’s so incredibly convenient that they have their own large parking lot downtown!
Wasabi Japanese Restaurant
I’m always hitting up wasabi for their affordable lunch special. Monday through Saturday from 11am-3pm, Wasabi offers a 2 roll lunch special with miso soup for only $6.95, a 3 roll lunch special with miso soup for $9.95, and many more combos where that came from. The sushi is so fresh and tasty. I love the Spicy Crunchy Crab roll and the Boston roll, but there is an assortment of rolls to choose from. Wasabi offers take out, or you can go for a nice sit down lunch.

I recently went to Betty’s to try their brunch and I was blown away. The atmosphere, drinks, and food were all phenomenal. We were seated at a cozy table for 2 right by the window, and started with the common brunch cocktails, a bloody mary and a mimosa, that were both quite enjoyable. My friend ordered the cherry chocolate french toast casserole. Yes, it was as good as it sounds. I ordered the Kafta Platter for $11, which is grilled Lebanese seasoned lamb patties served with tzatziki sauce, pita, two eggs, and home fries. The food was delicious and the service was impeccable. I know I’ll go back to Betty’s very soon for another tasty meal.

Founding Fathers is a cozy little bar, tucked away downtown. For under $10, Founding Fathers offers delicious salads, wraps and sandwiches, like the blackened blue chicken or burger charred with spices, topped with lettuce, tomato and blue cheese dressing. On the first Tuesday of every month, come to Founding Fathers for trivia night. Ask the bartender about the free snacks Founding Fathers offers (advertised on their website). Hang out and snack on free popcorn and nachos while trying to figure out the owners brain buster American History trivia.

Elmwood Tacos & Subs
When you’re on the Elmwood Strip, you should definitely make it a point to stop into ETS for some excellent Mexican food. The beef is seasoned perfectly and the fresh tortilla chips are salty and delicious. They have everything from Mexican pizza for around $9 to fried bologna subs for about $7. You can get a beef taco for as little as $1.65! Great quality Mexican food, fast and for a great price.
