Trail Running
Warm weather has a way of reinvigorating our adventurous souls. Rising temperatures, longer days, sunshine everywhere – we want to move, we want to be outside, we want to explore and push our limits. That passion for adventure is the fuel for this new series – Adventure & a Beer – which will highlight fun ways for Western New Yorkers to be active outdoors all summer long. Enjoy!

The Adventure

Allegany Adventure Run @ Allegany State Park

Winter is tough on runners. Cold temperatures and darkness push us to visit local gyms to run mile after tedious mile on treadmills. It’s not uncommon for runners to rack up fewer miles during winter months and/or lose their motivation a bit. If there’s an upside to all of it, it’s that once spring hits in Western New York, there are a gazillion great places for outdoor runs.
One of the best is Allegany State Park in the Southern Tier. It’s a bit of a drive from Buffalo, but it’s worth the time spent. Make the trip Saturday, May 7 to take part in the Allegany Adventure Run. It’s a race that allows runners to explore the park’s numerous hiking/cross country skiing trails. The event is hosted by Heart Rate Up (if you live in Western New York and love adventure – check them out for events year round) and offers the right challenge for everyone.

New to trail running but intrigued? Sign up for the race and take part in the 6K route. It’s a shorter track but allows runners to get lost in the trails a bit and experience downhill stretches and uphill climbs that will have you breathing heavy.
Run a few days a week and looking for a challenge? Take on the race’s 13K route which offers the same combinations of uphill/downhill running but for long stretches of time and really pushes runners to compete.
Love long runs, grueling climbs and competition? This year’s race boasts a longer full course at 27K (over a half marathon). This race is for those ready to move as there are check points along the way that runners need to hit by certain times to continue. Also, the last 2-to-3 mile stretch is essentially all uphill and will have every inch of your lungs and legs burning. It’s a remarkable accomplishment to complete the race.
The races all start and finish near the summit area inside the Red House section of Allegany State Park starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7. Entry fees are $25, $30 or $45 depending on which distance you run and there are prizes, food, snacks and fun after everyone completes their runs. Find more info and sign up here.

The Beer

Ellicottville Brewing Company

28 Monroe Street, Ellicottville NY 14731
No matter which distance you take on at the Allegany Adventure Run, you’ll deserve a beer to celebrate afterward. One idea? Drive about 20 minutes back from Allegany State Park toward Buffalo to the Ellicottville Brewing Company. The brewery offers great beers like Stainless Steel Obsession (their flagship IPA that is “stuffed with hops” and 7.0 ABV to ease the pain) or maybe the Nut Brown Ale is more your speed as it offers great roasted flavors, reminiscent of dark chocolate and a nice earthy English hop finish. Either beer can be paired with some of EBC’s great menu items like the Texas Brisket Sandwich, Fish Tacos or EBC Brew Burger.
