Mother and Son team, Laura and Patrick Anhalt are teaming up to bring Buffalo a state-of-the-art espresso bar. The RUST ESPRESSO Bar Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign has a goal of $53,000 in 53 days. This twosome is betting that the sourcing, extraction and brewing methods they will use will produce unquenchable espresso and coffee beverages.
Team Anhalt plans to open a fully manual espresso bar that also offers hand-poured and immersion method drinks by highly trained Baristas. The 3rd wave concept is a reference to making everything by hand and is quite unique in the region. The store will produce espresso using the “Slayer” espresso machine, which is made in America and considered by local experts as one of the best produced. Their specific machine is being custom designed and transported from Seattle, WA. Their Indiegogo campaign started Monday and ends on April 3, 2015 at 12pm.
The shop will also offer high quality, house made pastries, sandwiches and more. Products will be locally sourced when possible. Plans are to be open this coming summer. A final location has yet to be selected. Check out their menu here. The Rust Espresso team plans to hold coffee appreciation workshops beginning in April.

What is RUST Espresso and the concept behind it?
According to their Indiegogo campaign page:
RUST Espresso will be an Espresso Bar –but not just any Espresso Bar. We are establishing an innovative, all-manually operated 3rd Wave Espresso Bar that will be unique in the region! But what does that mean? Sure it sounds kind of geeky, but what it means is that our focus is centered on the quality of each and every single cup of espresso or coffee we make– from the source of the bean and the roasting skill, to the extraction technique and brewing method. This idea is the foundation from which all other components of our business stem.
We believe that in order to obtain the best quality drinks possible we need to operate a fully manual espresso bar that also offers hand-poured & immersion method drinks. We will not use any type of equipment that isn’t operated solely by hand. The benefits of operating a fully manual espresso bar is that we can control every variable in the brewing and extracting processes guaranteeing the best flavors and aromas every single time – and not an easy task either, which makes it a MUST for our professional team of Baristas to be heavily trained in every aspect of the coffee-making industry. Both Patrick and I, as well as our future espresso bar manager, Shawn, have been through arduous (more like super cool!) training for the past year and have been traveling all over the place to achieve our certified Barista status.
Who are we?
We are Laura and Patrick Anhalt, a mother and son team from Buffalo, NY. that has partnered up as the owners and concept creators of RUST Espresso.
Motivated by our passion for good coffee and our eagerness to learn more about that specific niche in the food industry – an industry we already thrive in, we’ve spent months traveling extensively within the United States and Canada getting trained in Espresso Machine Operations, Corporate Coffee Excellence Programs and Barista Training Seminars including advanced Latte Art Creations and Milk Texturing, with the idea of bringing a whole new level of knowledge and excitement about innovative coffee brewing methods and exquisite espresso extraction techniques to our beloved Buffalo region.
