Congratulations, WNY! You made it through March, not to mention another winter. While it wasn’t quite as bad as it coulda been (we deserve it), we’re thrilled to be mostly out of the woods (ya know, after this snow storm passes) and plan to *live it up* this spring once it actually arrives. Cancer Physician, Researcher, and Pulitzer Price-Winning Author of “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer” will be speaking at Alumni Arena at UB North this month as part of their Distinguished Speakers Series. Improvathon 2016 4/8-4/10
@ The Arena in Amherst
If fun and carefree is what you’re looking for, look no further. Spread out over three days and 49 1/2 hours, this event brings you improv literally whenever you’re ready for it. Improvathon features 25 straight ComedySportz matches, which is improvisational comedy played as a sport. Teams of professional comedians from across the US compete for laughs and points while a ref calls fouls and gets suggestions from you, the loyal fans. Tickets can be purchased individually or as All Access Passes and range from $1 – $35. Get tickets here.
Riverworks is putting on a Thawfest, which would be fitting if I weren’t completely frozen to the bone as I write this. But still, A for effort. If you didn’t get enough beer and wine in the past few months, head to Riverworks on April 8th. Drive carefully, we hear there’s a snow storm rolling in. But when has that ever stopped us? Small Press Book Fair
Small Press Book Fair 4/9 – 4/10

This two-day book fair brings together booksellers, authors, bookmakers, zinesters, small presses, artists, poets, and regional cultural workers together in the beautiful Karpele’s Manuscript Library. The event is free for the public to attend.
Sarah Koenig: Binge-worthy Journalism 4/11

The Host & Co-Creator of SERIAL (the epic podcast you’ve SURELY heard of) is coming to UB this month. She was named one of Time Magazine’s 2015 “The 100 Most Influential People”, was a producer for This American Life, and has done tons of other cool stuff. You shouldn’t miss this. Local Restaurant Week 4/11-4/17
All around WNY
What comes twice a year and is busting at the seams with opportunities to try local restaurants all in one week? Local Restaurant Week! If you are new to the LRW experience, here’s how it works. A great big list of 200 locally owned restaurants get together and offer prix fixe menus for $20.16, $30.16, and $40.16. This is a great way to sample multiple courses and try new restaurants for a little less than you might normally spend. San Fermin makes its Buffalo debut promoting its second album, Jackrabbit. Fermin which is actually an eight person touring ensemble, is the work of Brooklyn composer and songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone who studied music at Yale.

Allentown Pub Crawl 4/15
This marks the start of the summer pub crawl season for Buffalo History Tours and we’re pretty excited about it. Kick off with an Allentown crawl, discover how the neighborhood supposedly changed the course of American history, visit some favorite local taverns, and more. Buffalo Wine Festival 4/16

Record Store Day is a national event that takes place on the third Saturday in April every year. It’s meant to celebrate the culture of independently owned record stores. Here in Buffalo five local shops will be participating with festivities, parties, live music, sales, and more.
Buffalo Unconference 4/16

A gathering where people come to learn in an open environment. Buffalo Unconference is an interactive event with talks, demos, and plenty-of-time for discussions between attendees. Everyone is encouraged to participate, attendees create the agenda by presenting on topics that they love. Anyone with something to contribute or the desire to learn is welcome to join and/or listen. Cabin Fever Beer & Wine Fest 4/16

Because you can never have enough beer/wine festivals. Or can you? The First Annual Cabin Fever Beer and Wine Festival is presented by the Buffalo Ski Club Freestyle Team, and hosted at the Tamarack Lodge (7414 State Road (rt.240) Colden, NY). Tickets include admission, tastings from breweries and wineries, a tasting glass, live music, and more. Tickets are $25.
BBQ & Brews Beer Pairing Dinner 4/19

This event brings together Wayno’s BBQ, Resurgence Brewing, and Step Out Buffalo for a delicious night of bbq and beer pairings. Not only is Wayno’s hard to come by, it’s also beloved. If you have yet to taste it, you’re missing out! Tickets are currently sold out, but we will be releasing a super limited amount available at Resurgence Brewery as the event gets closer so stay tuned! Tickets are $40.

Cherry Blossom Fest 4/30 – 5/7
@ the Japanese Garden behind the Buffalo History Museum
While majority of this week long festival is happening in May, it starts on Saturday, April 30th. This year the festival includes an Opening Ceremony, a Traditional Tea Ceremony in the garden, Family Day, a Japanese Film Festival, Hoppy Hour, Sakura Spring Party-Cherry Blossom Viewing Cocktail Party, and much more.
