Black Sheep Rising

Bistro Europa was considered by many as one of the best places for food in Buffalo. The tiny 29.5 seat spot on Elmwood near Hodge was renowned for its creativity, aggressive local sourcing, house made everything and hard to get tables. Husband and wife team Ellen and Steve Gedra closed it last March to make room for a dream – The Black Sheep.

Fast forward some five months through a major overhaul of a ~100 year-old building on Connecticut that once housed The Golden Key Tavern. Rising from the aged ruin is another shining star in a neighborhood that is fighting to become one of Buffalo’s latest success stories.

Present are the breads and desserts home made by Ellen. Present is the locally sources meats and produce, the succulent pork done in oh so many ways and a fine beer list. New to the program is a grand space worthy of some of the best dining Buffalo has to offer.

The new digs offer more than double the seating with a comfortable brick bar area, spacious dining room and space for parties. Perfect for the rest of summer and fall is an awesome patio space in the back/side.

The Black Sheep has quietly opened their doors. Unlike a typical new restaurant I’m confident they will be up too top speed lickedy-split and the many fans of Bistro Europa will be filling the seats. I’d set the calendar now for a special dinner ASAP.

Some of the inspired items we spotted on the menu:

  • Skin Fritters ($7) – chow-chow, chimichurri, romesco
  • Fish Plate ($16) – assorted cured and smoked fish preparations
  • Thai Bologna Lettuce Wrap ($8) – rice noodles, vegetables, peanut, soy
  • Watermelon Gazpacho ($8) – kaffir lime granite

  • Smoked T-Meadow Pork Chop ($32) with heirloom grits, braised greens
  • Smoked Jerked Oles Chicken Leg and Thigh ($25) with dirty rice, corn and tomato gravy
