Are you looking for a fun and sassy way to get rid of some unwanted pounds? Or perhaps you just want to learn some new dance moves and tone up what you already have. Well, whatever your reasoning is, look no further than WNY’s first Bollywood class!
Started by Gaitrie Devi, a spunky and energetic dance instructor from New York City, Devi Bollywood Dance (920 Niagara Falls Blvd., Tonawanda) offers a new and exciting way to break a sweat while learning about a different culture. Now you may not think you know what Bollywood is, but you’ve probably seen this type of dance included in many famous performing artist’s music videos such as Britney Spears, Madonna, and Shakira.
Bollywood originated from the Indian film industry. Indian movies include plenty of Indian dancing and that’s how the term Bollywood came about. There are different styles encompassed in this dance trend, which includes Bhangra, Garba, and Classical to name a few.
Devi moved from New York City to Buffalo three years ago and noticed that this dance, which has been a very important part of her culture, was not offered anywhere in Western New York. She wanted the community to have the opportunity to explore the uniqueness and hip style that is Bollywood dancing, so she began hosting workshops for folks to attend. Her persistence to offer a new opportunity to Western New Yorker’s clearly paid off, and now Devi is a full-time instructor.
Now, you don’t have to be a lifelong dancer to become a pro at Bollywood dancing. Bollywood includes a mixture of hip movements, arm movements, leg movements, and more. Devi makes the moves simple and straightforward, so it’s very easy to follow along. Dancers start the class by stretching into Yoga positions to slowly awaken the body for dance. In her beginners class, she starts out with no music and explains each and every step to participants. Once she feels that the class has caught on, she puts on the jams and lets everyone run wild with energy!
The class is open to all ages and it is simply a blast. You won’t even realize you are working out; it’s also a great stress reliever because your mind is solely focused on having a good time. The dance studio offers a calm and relaxing environment with bright colors and themes that make one happy when entering the studio. Dress is very casual and you don’t even have to wear shoes.
So, if you’ve tried other forms of dance for exercise and enjoyed it, don’t miss out on the opportunity to shake the pounds away at Devi Bollywood Dance. Not only will you have an amazing time, you will also make a few great friends!
Beginner’s Bollywood sessions begin at 6 p.m. on Mondays from June 2 through June 23. Bollywood Bhangra sessions begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 4 to June 25.
