We love to bring you word on everything awesome happening in this city and the surrounding areas. So, it should come as no surprise that when homegrown entrepreneurs decide to put their blood, sweat and tears into the local economy, we want you to be the first to know.
Buffalo natives Chris Covelli and Garret Green are jumping into the widely untapped market of french fries with a casual, gourmet, quick serve french fry joint called #getfried. They hope to grow the concept into a national chain. Right about now you’re thinking “French Fries are you kidding me? I can go anywhere for those!”. And sure you can, but not like this.
Come Valentine’s Day, Covelli and Green will get their start taking on the franchise world, and more importantly, the WNY “Fry Cafe” market. Founder and managing partner Chris Covelli’s background includes managing golf tournament and corporate sales with ADPRO Sports. Co-founder and managing partner Garret Green, who has been an entrepreneur his whole life, has experience launching multiple consumer brands including his growing vodka company, ONE ROQ Vodka.
Why fries you ask? “Fries are one of the most popular foods in the world. Fry Cafés have been a part of Canadian and European food culture for years, but there really haven’t been many opened in the US,” explained the co-founders. The duo understands the proud nature of the Buffalo culinary scene and feels confident that #getfried will become part of the larger culture here based on a consistent, tasty product, revolving around french fries.
What makes the fries special or the #getfried experience more appealing than any burger joint serving fries? First things first, they’ll offer four types of fries; straight cut, waffle, curly and sweet potato. They also promise a “consistently crispy” fry. “We have made it a point to make sure every one of our fries is always crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle,” the gf team explained. Plus, the fact that they are using a high quality oil which is both GMO and Gluten free also sets them apart.
Nationally, French Fry Heaven currently claims to be the French fry franchise king of the US, but they have yet to make their way into Western New York. Don Warfe, former owner of Just Pasta, plans to open Just Fries on Main Street, Buffalo in the near future.
The biggest difference you will find at #getfried is the wide array of toppings, providing for a more gourmet approach to the fry eating experience. With over thirty different sauces and seasonings you’re sure to find something that will suit your taste buds. If you’re looking for spicy, they have it covered with Buffalo sauce or Cajun spice. Looking for BBQ? No problem. Speaking of spicy, the “716” specialty plate sounds like a winner with Spicy Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese. Or how about Southern Comfort, offering a choice of Pulled Pork or Chicken drizzled with wood fired BBQ sauce? And to answer your next question, yes, Oh’ Canada, a poutine style dish, is first on the list.
Others to get excited about include:
- Pizza Head – Pepperoni, Mozzarella Cheese and Marinara Sauce
- Sweet Tooth – Sweet Potato Fries, drizzled honey and Cinnamon
- The Brit (Fish n’ Chips) – Battered fish, tarter sauce, cilantro and lemon (Not exactly how “The Brits” take their fish but it sounds good to us!)
Truthfully they all look good. See the full menu here.
On top of 12 specialty plates (available sizes: medium for $5.99 or large for $7.99), #getfried offers an extensive “Build-Your-Own” menu (Small $3.99 / Medium $4.99 / Large $6.99). First pick your fry style, then choose toppings from hearty options like pulled pork, ground sirloin and hummus and top it all off with basic sauces, special sauces, seasonings, more toppings and/or sweets.
It is clear Covelli and Green want the #getfried brand to become a part of the culture here and they want the customer to be involved. One way they are going to accomplish this is by utilizing social media to prompt customers to create their own monthly special via online contests. The winners will win five free baskets of fries, a #getfried t-shirt and a hat.
Covelli and Green want everyone to know that they “are so proud to be able to launch #getfried in Buffalo” and they hope to expand from here. Their immediate plans include a flagship location in downtown Buffalo for their second location. This cafe will have seating, feature Buffalo themed artwork, as well as a local beer selection.
As you can see these local boys are ready to shovel out their place in the franchise world, while also showing Buffalo plenty of love. So, head on over to the Galleria Mall on Valentine’s Day and show them some.
Hours: Same as the mall: Monday–Saturday 10am – 9:30pm, Sunday 10am – 7pm. Pending approval from the county inspector, they will be open at 10am on Saturday.
