When doing anything other than homework feels like a guilt trip, you know it’s time to get studying. Every college student knows the best place to study is a cafe, under the caffeinated spell of coffee (or just a darn good panini) and who are we kidding, public scrutiny. These urban coffee shops around Buffalo offer the ideal atmosphere for jumping on that paper you’ve been procrastinating on thus far, or finally reviewing for your exam that’s in two days. Looking for a new place to put in some long hours?
In no particular order, here are some of our favorite places in Buffalo for studying:
1002 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo, NY 14222 / 69 Delaware Ave, Buffalo, NY 14202
Located just a skip, step and a hop from Buffalo State, Ashker’s is a popular place to grab a coffee, sit down over a light healthy breakfast, or buckle down for a solid study date. Filled with mismatched vintage furniture, plants, and eclectic paintings by local artists, Ashker’s offers the ideal atmosphere for reading, thinking and learning. If you’re not a coffee-addict, or you’re looking for something a bit more refreshing to recharge, Ashker’s makes their own freshly-squeezed juice!
2. Daily Planet
1862 Hertel Ave, Buffalo, NY 14216
Between Canisius and UB South, Daily Planet serves up some delicious coffee, as well as paninis, wraps, salads and other sweet goodies. This cozy coffee shop offers a unique study atmosphere for students who prefer background noise while writing a paper, studying their notes or solving a math equation. Every week, Daily Planet has new local musicians performing acoustic, coffeehouse tunes for customers to enjoy while they sip (and study).
1127 Hertel Ave., Buffalo, NY
This literal garage-turned cafe has a super cool vibe, with plenty of tables (and outlets) for tackling some school work. The Garage Cafe’s extensive menu consists of coffee, paninis, burgers, sandwiches, salads, small plates, and brunch bites to spice up your study session. Things may get a little rowdy once the evening bands come on, so if you’re easily distracted, we suggest getting your studying out of the way in the am.
391 Washington St, Buffalo, NY 14203 / 2178 Seneca Street Buffalo, NY 14210
This downtown cafe, espresso bar and small batch roastery nestled in Hotel Lafayette is ideal for getting work done. Comfortably spacious characterized by high ceilings, white marble tables, black abstract paint accents, elegant plants, and chic couches, Public Espresso hosts a fabulous study space. The cafe’s menu presents a variety of delicious pastries, toasts, bowls, salads and sandwiches to pair with your scrumptious coffee!
5. Remedy House

6. Spot Coffee
This is a go-to location for a long, hard study sesh. Spot has plenty of study nooks, charging outlets, and all kinds of seating for any type of study (high-top chairs with a window view, couches for the loungers, and tables for those who like to lay out every one of their notebooks/papers/laptops/etc.). They also serve over-the-counter breakfast, lunch, and dinner in case you need a little extra fuel.
