Theatre lover’s it’s that time of year again…
The 41st annual celebration of the opening of Buffalo’s professional theatre season is officially back in person for the first time since 2019! If you’re headed downtown to take part in the all the fun events to kickstart the new season, here’s everything you need to know:
Vincent O’Neill Induction into the Plaza of Stars:
The Theatre District will kick off the week by inducting internationally acclaimed actor and director, Vincent O’Neill into the Plaza of Stars. The Dublin born actor was embraced by the Buffalo community when he and his brother performed here in 1985 and brought classic Irish plays, playwrights, and actors to the Buffalo Niagara region. As Artistic Director Emeritus he continues to lend his voice and passion to the Irish Classical Theatre Company.
Vincent’s star will be unveiled on Monday, September 12 at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. The free street celebration will feature exciting performances and entertainment shining a spotlight on the theatre industry in WNY and supporting businesses passionate about the joy and magic of theatre.
The Curtain Up! 2022 Schedule:
Curtain Up! will be held on Friday, September 16 in Buffalo’s Theatre District. Fitting with the theme, the evening will be divided into two acts which will include a wide variety of shows, followed by free entertainment on the streets within the district.
Act I – Theatre Performances
8:00 pm –Curtains rise simultaneously at all participating area theaters.
Act II – Free Street Party
10 pm -12:00 midnight –When the curtains fall, the free Theatre District street party goes into high gear. Free outdoor entertainment will feature a wide variety of music and specialty acts. The event will also include a range of food and drink options from participating restaurants and food trucks.
