Mexican restaurants often feel like an after-thought to me. Sure, great for the late night munchies, drive-by lunch, quick and easy dinner- but not a real night out. Not so at Don Tequila’s on Allen – full bar, comfortable tables and booths, quick service and good food. I was in the O.P. location just before it burned down last year. The decor is still a little cliché, but it’s not over the top.
Food: Mexican, Tex-Mex; The complimentary salsa and chips are a little better than average.
Entrees: I had the Grande Burrito with shredded pork. The pork was made fresh and had excellent flavor. The burrito was grande and tasty. Perhaps it could use a little more heat but the bottle was right there on the table- problem solved.
My companion ordered the chicken taco salad- “good, not great” was the review.
Menu Items missed: The menu includes your standard Mexican flair with a few more “dinner” options than most. In all candor I would be hard pressed not to get the Grande Burrito when I return.
Scene: Busy Thursday night crowd. The tables were full. We waited 5minutes for a table. Misc. sports played on the three TVs at a mostly full bar.
Service: Reasonably quick, the food comes out on schedule- theirs not yours.
Clientele: Mostly young, but the mature crowd was surprisingly well represented for a Mexican restaurant on Allen.
Beverages: Full bar with a couple beers on tap. I had a bottle of Pacifico. I did not see a wine list.
Final thoughts: I’m no Mexican food expert, but I know what I like. I’ll definitely return to Don Tequila’s.
