2114 Seneca Street Buffalo, NY 14210

From murals to food and drink options galore, South Buffalo is getting better and better by the day. And nothing beats the combination of old-school charm and new-school options. Joining the new-schoolers of the neighborhood like Public Espresso and Cantina 62 is Cookies & Cream Ice Cream Shop located at 2114 Seneca Street Buffalo, NY 14210 right next to updated old-schooler The Blackthorn Restaurant & Pub.

The new shop has their grand opening planned for Saturday, September 19th and plans to differentiate themselves by including cookies in every order according to their website. Also out of the norm, Cookies & Cream will serve Giffords Ice Cream, a brand from Maine instead of the WNY usual – Perry’s. While we’re not sure which flavors will be available locally, the brand offers options like Fly Fishing Fudge, Dough Your Job, Mississippi Mud Pie, and Sea Salt Caramel Truffle.

The Chrusciki Bakery brand opened a new location inside the Eastern Hills Mall this August with three restaurant concepts under one roof. Chrusciki Bakery & Cafe, Simply Pierogi, a fast casual pierogi restaurant, and Sto Lat Bar are bringing Polish cuisine to Transit in a big way.

Sto Lat Bar is the most formal of the three concepts, offering a full-service bar with a small plates menu for lunch and a full-service dinner menu offered after 5 pm. In addition to an exciting Polish cuisine-forward menu you’ll find beer, wine and cocktails at this European lounge.

5. Simply Pierogi

4475 Transit Rd., Buffalo, NY 14221, Suite 108

One thing Buffalonians love is pierogi. Put pierogi together with anything and WNY pretty much goes wild.

So naturally we’re obsessed with the brand new Simply Pierogi – Polish Kitchen that just opened this month at The Eastern Hills Mall. The fast-casual restaurant is part of the brand new 3-in-1 restaurant setup under the Chrusciki Bakery brand along with Sto Lat Bar.

You may have heard earlier this Spring that Chrusciki Bakery left their long standing spot at The Broadway Market due to decreased traffic over the years. They relocated to 4475 Transit Rd. (Suite 108) at the mall and decided to take a three-pronged approach to Polish food, drink, and baked goods. Under the same roof you’ll find all three concepts – Simply Pierogi, Chrusciki Bakery & Cafe, and Sto Lat Bar, a bar and restaurant serving shared plates and main dishes.

7. First Line Brewing

4906 S. Buffalo St., Orchard Park

Orchard Park’s first brewery has officially opened it’s doors as of this past weekend. First Line Brewing, located at 4906 S. Buffalo St. in Orchard Park (next to Beerz on the corner of Jewett Holmwood), announced their initial lineup of beers to their social media followers leading up to their grand opening.

Offerings included unique and uniquely named options like Bitch’n Betty Blueberry Muffin Ale, named after the software in fighter jet cockpits that warns pilots of any issues – Betty was an actual person who recorded the voice overs! They also announced a Fruity Pebble NEIPA and explained in a Facebook post that you can expect to taste their juicy NEIPA (New England IPA) upon the first sip, and actual fruity pebbles towards the finish – “like drinking the milk at the end of your bowl of cereal”.

8. Sunshine Vegan Eats

893 Jefferson Ave, Buffalo 14204

The newest vegan restaurant to hit Buffalo is located on Buffalo’s East Side, in the historic Fruit Belt neighborhood.

The new Sunshine Vegan Eats is located at 893 Jefferson Avenue and owner Chef Nikki Searles said her fast casual, animal-free restaurant concept located just outside the Fruit Belt neighborhood has been a booming success.

“It has been extremely, extremely amazing!” she said, in a recent phone interview. “When I first started out, I was busy. COVID hit; and it slowed down a little bit. Just from, you know everybody was nervous. People not knowing what to do. Nobody knew nothing. As things are changing back, I’m getting so much business – to the point that I have really outgrown my kitchen.”

9. Graylynn

537 Main Street, Buffalo 14203

Finding success with both a modern corner bar concept in Ballyhoo and the whisky palace known as Lucky Day, Buffalo restaurateur Tim Stevens is looking for a hospitality hat trick with the opening of Graylynn – a brick-and-mortar meditation on gin and gin cocktails.

Nestled at the corner of Main Street and Genesee, next to Buffalo’s iconic gold dome, Graylynn is a bistro, a food market and a literal gin mill all rolled into one. Stevens told us the complex concept was born out of the idea to fill specific niches: In that stretch of Main Street, office workers may be looking for anything from an upscale lunch break, to a grab-and-go sandwich, to an afterwork cocktail.

Thinking back on his strong history in hospitality operations, Stevens said the key to a successful restaurant concept is “you don’t shove a square peg in a round hole. You gotta see exactly what concept belongs where.”

10. Fattey Beer Co. – Orchard Park

Beers aren’t cancelled in 2020 and neither is the opening of Fattey Beer Co.’s third location in the Village of Orchard Park.

Located on N Buffalo St., Orchard Park’s newest bottle shop / tasting bar offers a huge variety of bottled beer from around the world. They also offer beers on tap, and a selection of wine, seltzer, cider, non-alcoholic drinks, and a limited food menu.

Fattey’s third location is in addition to their first location in the Village of Hamburg and a second in Downtown Buffalo at the intersection of Main and Genesee.

11. Rock Burger USA – Cheektowaga

2810 Union Road, Cheektowaga 14227

Japan may be content with its simple raw fish and Italy may be happy with its basic bowl of pasta. But here in America goddammit, we serve food on top of – and inside of – other food.

At the new Rock Burgeryou could eat a basic cheeseburger, vegan burger or chicken sandwich. You could. But why do that when you can have a burger stuffed with Bison chip dip, chicken wing dip and/or crushed Oreos?

All this is to say – Rock Burger is about having fun with food. With two locations, the burger company is building success and the opening of its newest location – on Union Road in Cheektowaga – during a global pandemic is a testament to the winning formula. Working off the concept developed by company founder Jason Lizardo, new store co-owners Brandon Markant and Derrick Ferraro used their backgrounds in restaurant management to flesh out the new burger joint.

Ok, you got us. When we said “new”, we meant new-ish.

Rec Room, a music venue currently unable to host it’s usual shows thanks to Covid, has launched a 2.0 version of itself fit for these coronatimes. Rec Room 2.0 consists of a weekly supper club series, brunch and nightlife venue of sorts.

The pre-covid music venue shifted gears when they started offering a pop-up take out menu in June. Once WNY’s phased opening allowed for eat-in service at restaurants, Rec Room made the move towards food service, offering a Supper Club Series every Saturday night.
