Description

Following the Renaissance, composers appealed to the emotions. The energy of the Baroque era (1600-1750) added new instruments, dance rhythms, often explosive content, and virtuoso playing. New structures for organizing music planted seeds for standard Western Classical formats. Some of the most exciting, free-wheeling music of the period is rarely heard today. Five basic themes explore highlights of this period. Musical selections illustrate the evolution of styles from Monteverdi and Gabrielli to Vivaldi and Bach.
