Students will work from a live model each day to create a convincing, lifelike portrait in charcoal. Key concepts covered will include construction of the head, light & shadow, shapes, values & edges, use of charcoal medium, studio practices and proper use of materials. Technical instruction will be supplemented with brief lectures and demonstrations to offer structured approaches to portraiture from a live model. Participants will receive personalized attention and assistance. This workshop is open to artists ranging from intermediate to advanced, interested in taking their present skill level to a higher degree. Some prior experience drawing from real life is recommended, as we focus on strengthening participants’ foundation in traditional portraiture.

All supplies will be provided, with a discussion on materials individuals may want to purchase. Lunch will not be supplied. Please feel free to bring a bagged lunch or something to snack on.
