Jony James has been playing clubs, concerts and festivals for over 50 years. Having gone on the road at age 17, music is his life.
Born in Buffalo, NY Jony’s family moved to the south side of Chicago when he was 6 years old. At the time, the south side was intensely filled with blues, jazz, gospel, soul, rhythm & blues, and all sounds of music. BB King, Albert King, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Jimi Hendrix, J.B. Hutto, Eddie Taylor, Hound Dog Taylor, John Littlejohn, Willie Williams are just a few of the greats who influenced Jony and have changed his life forever.
As a teenager Jony played school dances, talent shows at churches, and three times at the famed Regal Theatre. He went on to play clubs including Burning Spear, Teresa’s, Wise Fools, Ma B’s and Buddy Guy’s Checkerboard Lounge.
In the early 70’s, while sitting in one night with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jony met and began working with harmonica wizard Shakin Smith and he relocated back to Buffalo. After playing coast to coast with various outfits in the U.S. and Canada for over 15 years, he formed The Jony James Band in the early 90’s. The band toured the East Coast and Southeast United States. They were signed with Blue Wave Records and released two cd’s. Jony has produced and released 5 independent cd’s and was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.
