Description

Buffalo Arts Studio announces the opening of a new collaborative exhibition titled Homing by SUNY Buffalo professor Matt Kenyon and Eastern Michigan University professor Jason J. Ferguson. Homing is among the first projects in the exhibition and workshops series titled Displacement: Reclaiming Place, Space, and Memory. The series, in partnership with grassroots activist groups, promotes the creation of new work, educates emerging artists, and fosters critical dialogue about transnationalism, arts access, and social justice. Displacement: Reclaiming Place, Space, and Memory is one of the 1,125 projects selected nationally to receive more than $26.6 million in funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Homing includes a variety of artworks that encourage visitors to reconsider the notion of domesticity through a combination of ideas, metaphors, and objects that take as a starting point aspects and images of the home. In the nearly 10 years that Kenyon and Ferguson have worked together around this theme, the world has undergone a social and political unraveling forcing many to turn inward to reflect and re-evaluate what is truly meaningful in their lives. Homing addresses the heightened intimacy of home while challenging the invisible systems that govern day-to-day existence.

Homing will include Kenyon’s latest version of TIDE, a champagne glass pyramid that raises awareness about climate change, and a series of micro-text projects. TIDE responds to the growing housing crisis and the loss of property value due to the effects of rising water and climate change. The three micro-text projects function as acts of protest and commemoration. For Alternative Rule, the lines on the paper are made up of names and dates of children who have been victims of gun violence since the Columbine High School shooting, for Notepad, each ruled line is revealed to be microprinted text enumerating the full names, dates, and locations of each Iraqi civilian death on record over the first three years of the Iraq War. In Log Rule, the names, dates, and locations of those who have died from COVID are preserved in the micro-printed text of the lines themselves. Kenyon offers sheets of the paper to anyone who would like to remember, in hopes that the tragic scale of losses we have faced from Covid-19 might allow us to move toward a more equitable future.

The new works Ferguson created for Homing reflect a deeper investigation into topics that the artist has explored throughout his career, including the replication, manipulation, and recontextualization of familiar objects to create uncanny experiences. This collection of small sculptures captures poetic moments from the sheltered and repetitive routine of life during a global pandemic. Each fragment was created by taking hundreds of photographs of seemingly mundane compositions inside the artist’s home. The process became an act of closely examining the quiet, often overlooked, arrangements of objects in space. The ruptured, incomplete forms highlight the limitations of the software and speak of focus, memory, and loss. This is an ongoing project with no determined end.

All of the programming in Displacement Reclaiming Place, Space, and Memory reflect the belief that artists and curators can effect change through purposeful collaborations that balance community needs, artistic insight, and educational impact. This series intends to not only display powerful visual statements, but to also spur dialogue between varied audiences that open doors to social and economic justice as well as a better understanding of displacement.
