Cool things to do at UB This Winter

Although the months of January and February bring biting cold weather, they also bring more than a handful of opportunities to enjoy events sponsored by the University at Buffalo.  Tempting as it may be to stay bundled up indoors, UB’s clubs and organizations strive to coax you out of your blanket-cave.  From hiking, to yoga, to Romeo and Juliet, below is a list of ten out of the many exciting events sponsored by UB this winter. AKA a list of ten reasons to actually leave your house.

UB Distinguished Speaker Series: Charles J. Ogletree, Jr.

DATE: Thursday, 2/11/16 @ 8 p.m.

LOCATION: Alumni Arena, UB North Campus

PRICE: $16-$34 (One free ticket for UB Student)

In the fall, UB brought us acclaimed celebrities and scholars like John Legend and Laverne Cox; and this winter, UB brings us more impressive intellects — beginning with theorist, Charles J, Ogletree, author and current professor at Harvard Law School.  Ogletree founded the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice and accordingly speaks and writes on those topics (and more!).  Get more information about this event and tickets here. This event is open to the public.

Infinity Dance Project

DATE: Sunday, 1/17/16 @ 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

LOCATION: Mainstage Theatre, UB Center for the Arts

PRICE: $16.50

If you’re like me — athletically challenged — but still appreciative of the art of dance, Infinity Dance Project will perform at the Center for the Arts this winter.  The dancers, ranging from age 13 to 18, characterize their group as a “performance outlet,” not a school.  Watch as these young talents entertain with their graceful performance!  Get more info about this event hereThis event is open to the public.

Romeo and Juliet from Aquila Theatre on Vimeo.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet presented by Aquila Theatre

DATE: Thursday, 3/10/16 @ 10:30 a.m.

LOCATION: Mainstage Theatre, UB Center for the Arts

PRICE: $10.00

What more can there be said about Romeo and Juliet that hasn’t been said already? Except, you know that it’s coming to UB and if you like Theatre at all you should go.  For more than 400 years, William Shakespeare has inspired countless theaters to perform and reinvent his harrowing and romantic classic.  This winter, UB brings Romeo and Juliet as presented by Aquila Theatre — a company touring out of NYC —  running about 2 and a half hours long. Check out the details for this event here. Heads up, they’re performing The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in Rochester a few days later! This event is open to the public.

Cinderella by Greater Buffalo Youth Ballet

Sleeping Beauty presented by Greater Buffalo Youth Ballet

DATE: Friday, 3/18/16 @ 10:30 a.m.

LOCATION: Mainstage Theatre at UB Center for the Arts

PRICE: $7.00

Greater Buffalo Youth Ballet will perform one of the most fundamental fairytales of all time this winter: Sleeping Beauty.  A conglomerate of magic, wickedness, romance, and ballet, this performance of Sleeping Beauty is sure to be as beautiful as Princess Aurora herself whether you’re going for yourself or sharing the magical experience with someone (wife, girlfriend, kiddos, mom, nieces and nephews, grammy). And for only $7.00, this show is a steal!  For more information about this event, visit here. This event is open to the public.
