  • Don’t miss this annual Christmas tradition in Buffalo. The public is invited to a Concert featuring Christmas music, new and old, in the iconic 160-year-old sanctuary of the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

The Westminster Choirs, its Handbell Choir, its historic Aeolian-skinner pipe organ, and the Buffalo Brass Octet join to offer a stunning array of Christmas classics. The free concert on December 21 at 7:30 pm will be held in the Sanctuary at Westminster Presbyterian Church located at 724 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo.

Highlights this year include K. Lee Scott’s The Incarnation, Herbert Howells’ A Spotless Rose, John Gardner’s Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, and John Rutter’s What Sweeter Music. The audience is warmly invited to join in singing favorite Christmas carols, led by the choirs under the direction of Garrett Martin, Organist and Choirmaster.

“Our annual Christmas Concert is a community event that offers a wide variety of music, including choirs, handbells, brass, organ, and percussion,” said Martin. “The audience is encouraged to join with the choirs and instruments to sing favorite carols in stunning arrangements. The spirit and the joy of the holiday season will be shared in this uplifting concert.”

The concert is free. Donations are gratefully accepted for the Westminster Friends of Music who support music and concert programming of Westminster Presbyterian Church, bringing world-class artists to Buffalo for services, concerts, and recitals.

+ Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols

Can’t make the concert on the 21st? Join Westminster Presbyterian Church for the annual Christmas Eve Festival of Lessons and Carols on Monday, December 24, 10 PM, at 724 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo. The Festival of Lessons and Carols celebrates the birth of Christ with biblical readings from both Testaments that anticipate and depict his nativity. The readings will be accompanied by choral music and congregational carols. This high and holy service of worship is celebrated in the church’s historic sanctuary in candlelight.

The Festival of Lessons and Carols is modeled after the service of the same name that originated at Kings College, Cambridge, England over a century ago. The service will be led by the Reverend Dr. Thomas H. Yorty, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

The service is profoundly moving, and somehow, year in and year out, tells this very old story that strangely never gets old but manages to speak to the deepest pain and longing of our time,” says Dr. Yorty.

The Westminster Choirs, the Westminster Handbells, and the Buffalo Brass Octet will present sacred Christmas carols accompanied by Westminster’s historic Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ. The Westminster music ministry is led by Garrett Martin, Organist and Choirmaster at Westminster.

“These cherished Christmas carols and anthems presented by the choirs are much-loved by all and are presented in grand style during this festival service,” says Martin. “We hope you will join us and lend your voice as we sing together.”
