Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the beauty and the power of Niagara Falls came to symbolize the country’s distinct natural heritage. Many artists made pilgrimages to the site in an attempt to capture its awe-inspiring majesty. Their images circulated throughout the United States and Europe, inspiring others to copy them or create their own visualizations. Today, artists continue to be drawn to Niagara Falls’ history and sense of place. In this exhibition, artist Stephen Hannock’s recent gift to the Albright-Knox, The Great Falls; for Xu Bing (MassMoca #180), 2013, will be joined by additional historical and contemporary interpretations of the natural wonder drawn from the museum’s collection.
