Many of Buffalo’s wealthiest families in the Roaring Twenties built grand summer homes along the Lake Erie shore south of the city. In 1924, the 17,000 square foot Suncliff mansion was completed as a summer home for Hans and Helen Schmidt.Built on 15 acres of Lake Erie shoreline property, the mansion and grounds feature an amazing vista of Lake Erie. Helen Schmidt was the youngest daughter of Jacob Schoellkopf, a Buffalo industrialist who operated a tannery and harnessed the hydraulic power of Niagara Falls. Helen’s husband, Hans, became president of the Schoellkopf business. In 1947, the mansion was sold to the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, which built an addition and used the property as the Columban Center Retreat House until 2017.
In 2017, Suncliff was purchased by David Johnson and Brenda Shaw, who are renovating the property to be used as a wedding venue and cultural center. Walking through the grand entrance is like taking a step back in time to the Gilded Age. The first floor’s original intricate woodwork and beautiful floors have been restored to their 1920s grandeur in preparation for hosting wedding receptions. On this Spotlight Tour, you’ll hear from David Johnson about the renovations he has undertaken and his plan for the property, while touring this beautiful lakefront mansion.
