Getting healthy, nailing that promotion, sorting our your finances – they’re all respectable resolutions. But frankly, they’re boring af, which is why we here at Step Out Buffalo are challenging you to really step out of your comfort zone in 2017 with the Buffalo Bucket List Challenge. We know it can be difficult to constantly come up with new and exciting ways to enjoy your time here on planet earth, and more specifically Western New York, so we’re doing the work for you. Every Wednesday this year we’ll publish a new Buffalo Bucket List Challenge post with a fun / interesting / exciting / unique “task” to try.

Buffalo Bucket List: Take a Scenic Fall Hike

Trekking on foot is the best way to see some awesome fall foliage this year! There’s no shortage of beautiful parks just a stone’s throw from Buffalo, so grab your PSL (because let’s face it, you’re basic and proud of it) and get moving! We have a fair amount of smaller parks like Como Park in Lancaster, Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, or Glen Park in Williamsville, but if you’re really looking for that wow factor (do it for the gram), it’s worth the drive to Letchworth or Watkin’s Glen!

1. Letchworth State Park

6625 Denton Corners Rd in Castile

Letchworth, often described as the Grand Canyon of the East, is a state park just over an hour outside of the city.  The horseshoe view is spectacular during any season, but the fall colors make the drive particularly worth it. Watkin’s Glen, another highly rated park about 2 ½ hours from the city, is located in the Finger Lakes region.  The hike is challenging if you start from the bottom and work your way uphill, or more relaxing if you park at the top and work your way down.  The crisp, fall weather makes this hike truly enjoyable!  You can make the trip in a day, but why not consider turning the trip into a weekend getaway.  You can hit up some of their cute, boutique shops, breweries, restaurants, and wineries while you’re there.

Where to Eat: If you’re hiking at Letchworth, it’s worth the little bit of extra drive to head over to Amber Lantern Brewing Company for a beer and Robin’s Ultimate Grilled Cheese with bacon!

2. Watkins Glen State Park

Watkins Glen, NY 14891

Watkin’s Glen, another highly rated park about 2 ½ hours from the city, is located in the Finger Lakes region. The hike is challenging if you start from the bottom and work your way uphill, or more relaxing if you park at the top and work your way down.  The crisp, fall weather makes this hike truly enjoyable!  You can make the trip in a day, but why not consider turning the trip into a weekend getaway.  You can hit up some of their cute, boutique shops, breweries, restaurants, and wineries while you’re there.

Where to Eat: If you choose Watkin’s Glen, you can stop at The Wildflower Cafe & The Crooked Rooster Brewpub for burgers, pizzas, or specialty items like their Crab & Gouda chips!
