Have a Free Family August

When you have a family, nothing is better than saving a couple of bucks every now and then. Especially when the price of everything seems to be going up lately. If you find yourself scrambling to make those precious summer of 2014 memories, but can’t seem to stretch the budget, let us help you out. Below you’ll find a family outing for every week in August with an admission price of $0.

Enjoy Frozen Fun on the Field

@ Coca-Cola Field, BuffaloDisney-frozen-free Buffalo

1 James D. Griffin Plz. | (716) 843-4373

By now we’re all wishing the kids would just, “let it go,” already, but it’s unlikely. Surrender to the hype and step out to Coca-Cola Field on August 7th for a free movie night featuring Disney’s Frozen. Sit in the stands near first base, or even better, lay a blanket on the field. This once a year event even has limited free parking in the Exchange St. lot. Gates open at 6pm and refreshments will be available for purchase during the movie.

Truck Along Old Falls St.

@ Old Falls St., Niagara Falls

101 Old Falls St. | (716) 278-2100

Old Falls St. is slowly becoming the Canalside of Niagara Falls. With a host of concerts and unique activities, it’s the perfect place for a family outing. On August 9th, the 4th Annual Touch-a-Truck event will take place between 2-5pm at the Middle Block. Kids and adults will have the chance to get up close to some of the coolest first response and construction vehicles around. Afterwards, hang out and grab a bite, play a backyard board game, or rent some bikes and cruise around the town.

Celebrate the Square

@ Niagara Square, Buffalo

Cirque du Square | BuffaloGet in on the ground floor of a new and exciting event happening in Niagara Square on Saturday the 16th. Come down and enjoy some live music, family entertainment, food and games. Cirque Du Square is an eclectic mix of performances organized in an effort to create a European style piazza in the heart of Downtown Buffalo. From 11am-5pm there will be a little bit of everything for everyone. Details are slowly coming in via Facebook so stay tuned and get ready.

Rock the Lock in Black Rock

@ Black Rock Channel, Buffalo

1776 Niagara St. | 1-800-833-6390

Completed in 1914, the Black Rock Lock has been directing seafaring vessels through the Black Rock Channel for 100 years. For this centennial celebration of modern industry, the US Army Corps of Engineers in Buffalo promise plenty of history, demonstrations, and interactive exhibits from 12-4pm on the 17th of August. Vintage music and concessions will also be on site as period re-enactors tell the story of Western New York’s other lock port.

See Some Fireworks at the Falls

@ Niagara Falls State Park, Niagara Falls

1 Prospect Park | (716) 278-1796

This one pretty much speaks for itself. Free access to our own Natural Wonder of the World is something we probably tend to take for granted. Get up and get out, and rediscover Niagara Falls under the cover of night and by the glow of the moonlight. Never mind that drive to Canada, they look just as beautiful from our side of the river. There are plenty of chances to see them this month: August 20, 22, 24, and every day from August 25-29th.

Finish the Festival Season on Elmwood

@ The Elmwood Strip, Buffalo

Elmwood Ave. between Lafayette and West Ferry | (716) 830-2484

Still got that summer festival fever? Look no further than the Elmwood strip. On the 23rd and the 24th, artists, performers, and a whole lot of looky-lous will descend on the Elmwood Arts Festival for one last summer bash. Though every part of the festival is family-friendly, those of us with the little ones will want to check out the Kid’s Fest tents and performances designed especially for children.

Spend a Friday at Canalside

@ Canalside, Buffalo

44 Prime St. | (716) 574-1537

If you haven’t been down to Canalside yet, get there at least once before summer is over. Every Friday is Family Fun Day from 11am-2pm. Sponsored by the Explore and More Children’s Museum, there are a number of activities to keep the kids happy, busy, and engaged in learning something new. On the 29th the Imagination Playground will be on hand for building castles, skylines and other assorted foam block masterpieces.

Cruise the Park with Some Cool Cars

@ Como Park, Lancaster

2220 Como Park Blvd. | (716) 632-9001

Summer just isn’t summer without going to at least one classic car show. On August 31st, 16 classes of MG automobile madness will come to Como Park in Lancaster. Categories include: Triumph, Jaguar, Corvair, Corvette, and a host of domestic stocks and modifieds. Sure, the cars are British, but the fun is all American. The field opens at 9am and the judging starts at noon. Food, games, and a Chinese auction will round out the entertainment for the day.
