Once your mouth has tasted the pokes of Hawaii, you become immediately skeptical of any poke that hails from the tropical lands that comprise the Northeastern region of the United States… oh, wait… 

But for real, let’s tip our hats to Fresh Catch Poke Co. as a restaurant before I dive into their brunch. It’s not easy to bring fresh seafood to Buffalo – let alone introduce people to the savory, lip-smacking deliciousness that is poke. Well, call it a miracle, ‘cause Fresh Catch has done it. Crisp, crunchy, thoughtfully-selected vegetables, house-curated sauces that are packed with umami, and soft, pillowy rice – all topped with flavorful raw and cooked seafood options.

Fresh Catch is located exactly halfway between my parents and I, and my mom and dad are absolutely obsessed with their poke bowls (shout-out to the “Bubba” and the “Aloha OG”), so I’ve had the pleasure of eating here quite a few times for dinner. Their brunch is a Saturday and Sunday offering of their regular menu as well as an additional brunch menu made up of signature and build-your-own açaí bowls, and avocado toast.

Yes – an avocado toast section! Can you say dreamy? While all of their signature toasts sound delightful, I had to get my fill of raw ahi tuna, so I went with the tuna pokecado toast. Sesame shoyu-tossed ahi tuna, green onion, edamame, toasted black sesame seeds, and fried onion atop avocado smash and Breadhive sourdough. I can say with confidence that this avocado toast could not have been better. The proportion of ingredients, balance of flavors, and absolute freshness of everything on top of the toast had my mom and I wanting to order another.

We also split the “pick me up” açaí bowl complete with bananas, raspberries, blueberries, chia seeds, toasted buckwheat groats, almond butter and local honey. For those of you unfamiliar with açaí, it’s a berry that derives from the açaí palm tree that is richer in antioxidants and omegas than cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, or blueberries. Once the açaí is made into a frozen fruit puree, it serves as the perfect base for a breakfast bowl (or a bowl that you can eat literally whenever you want). So refreshing and so filling – it’s impossible not to love it.

The icing on the cake of Fresh Catch’s brunch? The beverage options are abundant. Fresh coconut juice out of the coconut, kombucha, cold brew coffee, teas, beer, wine, and more. You can make what you want of it – but one thing is for sure, the beverage and food options at Fresh Catch are not only good – they’ll make you feel good. And isn’t good, soul-cleansing food really what we’re all looking for?!
