Spring is soon on the way to melt the gloom and lethargy of the winter — with spring comes the chance to reinvigorate yourself with sunny days, outdoor activities, and a fresh start.  This spring, the University at Buffalo brings more events your way — from lectures, to figure drawing, to dining.  If you need a spring cleaning for your own social schedule, here’s where to start!  Check out the list below and get ready for some of the best events sponsored by UB this spring. No, seriously.

 

Figure Drawing at the Center for the Arts

DATE: Every Wednesday from now until May 4th (closed March 18th over Spring Break)

TIME: 6 – 8:30 p.m.

LOCATION: The Center for the Arts, North Campus

PRICE: $5.00

Open to UB students and the public alike, the UB Department of Arts and Sciences offers a space for creative minds to spill onto canvas.  All you need to bring is your own sketchbook, drawing materials, $5 (and maybe a friend!).  Easels will be provided.  Whether you’re an experienced artist or you’re just trying your hand out for the first time — all are welcome to join this open studio!

 

UB Jazz Series Presents Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Bird Calls

DATE: 3/19/16

TIME: 8 p.m.

LOCATION: The Center for the Arts – Drama Theatre, UB North

PRICE: General Public $34.50; Students $20.50

Talented composer and saxophonist, Rudresh Mahanthappa, comes to UB this spring on his Bird Calls tour. Mahanthappa has been the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award.  Catch this special event this spring at the CFA and leave a lover of jazz!  For more information about this event, visit here.

David Cross: Making America Great Again

DATE: 3/19/16

TIME: 8 PM

LOCATION: The Center for the Arts – Mainstage Theatre, UB North

Along with the several other awesome speakers you’ll find on this list, Emmy Award-winner and Grammy Award-nominee David Cross will be on stage at UB this Spring. The inventive performer, writer, and producer on stage and screens both big and small will be stopping into town as part of his first national stand-up tour since 2019. Cross has been named one of the Top 100 Stand-Up Comedians of All Time by Comedy Central and one of the 25 best standup comedy specials and concert films of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in July 2015. Buffalo Film Seminars Presents Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull

DATE: 3/22/16

TIME: 7 p.m.

LOCATION: Dipson Amherst Theatre, UB South Campus

PRICE: Adults $9.50; students $7.50; seniors $7.00.

Celebrated professors Diane Christian and Bruce Jackson will screen the two-time Oscar winning film, Raging Bull (1980), at the Dipson Amherst Theatre with an engaging critical discussion to follow.  The Buffalo Film Series runs both fall and spring semesters, every Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a different film and discussion every week.  For more information about this event, click here; for more information about the Buffalo Film Seminars as well as the spring schedule, click here.

UB Comedy Series Presents Nick Offerman

DATE: 4/2/16

PRICE: Free for all UB Undergraduates; $35.00 and up for general public

Perhaps best known for his deadpan role as Ron Swanson on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, comedian, Nick Offerman, comes to UB this spring to perform stand up! UB Distinguished Speakers Series: Siddhartha Mukherjee

DATE: Wednesday, 4/6/16

TIME: 8 p.m.

LOCATION: Alumni Arena, UB North Campus

Following Professor Ogletree comes yet another astonishing scholar — Siddhartha Mukherjee.  Mukherjee, a doctor, won the Pulitzer Prize for his book, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.  Additionally, Mukherjee teaches at Columbia University in addition to working as a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine — if that’s not enough, Mukherjee also works as a physician at the Columbia University Medical Center.  This lecture offers up an in-depth look into the inner workings of this genius’s mind.  Click here for more information about this event and buy tickets here.

Late Night UB (Student Association) Presents UB Trippin’ Buffalo Zoo and Botanical Garden

DATE: 4/9/16

LOCATION: Student Union, UB North (Departure Point) to Buffalo Zoo and Botanical Garden

PRICE: Free!

UB Students Only

The SA invites fellow UB students to visit the Buffalo Zoo and Botanical Garden to honor the fresh, spring weather!  Get your fill of nature and socializing alike; learn about your favorite animals, or discover your new favorites, and bask in the beauty of the Buffalo Botanical Garden. Sarah Koenig: Binge-Worthy Journalism

Crime dramas have fascinated us all for years — however, within the last year, crime documentaries and podcasts have particularly picked up attention — from the Netflix original series, Making a Murder, to the HBO series, Jinx — we’re all addicted, constantly asking, “Who dunnit?!”.  This spring, Sarah Koenig, co-creator of the Serial podcast, offers an exclusive look at the behind the scenes work that goes into the making of these crime dramas, sharing anecdotes along the way. Though perhaps best known as a two-time Oscar winner, Kevin Spacey is a man of many talents: he not only acts, but, directs, produces, and performs comedy.  Currently, Spacey stars in the Netflix original series, House of Cards.  Talented and charming, Spacey can play just about any role — and UB is lucky enough to host him this spring! Late Night UB (Student Association) Presents Final Feast

DATE: 5/6/16

TIME: 10 p.m. – 1 a.m.

LOCATION: Student Union, North Campus

PRICE: Free!

UB Students Only

Sometimes, when you’re stressed out, the only sane option left is to eat!  Following the last day of classes and preceding the beginning of finals, this feast is chance to both celebrate and prepare yourself for the last stretch of the spring semester — and for seniors, this is one of the last UB events before graduation!  For more information about this event, visit here.
