For those of you looking to spend a special day bonding with your date over mind melting sustenance (yes, that kind of sustenance) in an atmosphere that doesn’t call for pantyhose and cufflinks (or cost you your first born), we bring you this list of edgier romantic restaurants. If your goal is fantastic food and a modest price range, it’s all about this list my friends.
North Buffalo / (716) 883-1675 / Reservations
If you and your beau are into food as much as you’re into each other, make a reservation at CRaVing where you can indulge in Nickel City Chef Adam Goetz’s daily cravings. The eclectic vibe offers a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere, making it easy to enjoy the forward approach they take with food and a laid-back meal with your loved one.
West Side / (716) 259-9306
The daily prix fixe menu, intimate space (intimate with the staff, not necessarily your date) and open kitchen at Martin Cooks makes for a unique, adventurous dining experience. Martin’s staff knows how to have fun, and they certainly know how to cook. This pick is perfect for the couple that prefers not to dote on each other, but rather wants to share in an unconventional, stimulating experience.
Downtown / (716) 783-8699 / Reservations
Sharing plates, strong cocktails, candlelight and a refurbished old building surrounded by dark wood, brick and food that makes you groan. Need we say more? Ambiance perfect for the aforementioned doting.
We love the soup (changes often) and their Braised Beef.
East Aurora / (716) 652-4720 / Reservations for 6 or more
Don’t let the bakery surrounds fool you. Although that’s part of the romantic lure of Elm Street, they consistently execute a fine dining menu in a seemingly limitless wood fired oven. Tall ceilings, attention to detail, an open kitchen and heat from the oven make this a top date night choice.
We love the Tartines, Plate of Pickles and Sticky Toffee Pudding.
Downtown / (716) 332-2928
In addition to the funky ambiance created by lighting and simplistic design, the food is sexy. Explore unique combinations of culture through Seabars diverse menu including sushi, soups, salads, entrees and other surprising options. Beef on Weck Sushi Roll. Enough said.
We love the Unagi BLT Handroll & Pork Enchiladas.
Downtown / (716) 853-1390
One of the newer restaurants in Buffalo that can easily be added to a list of romantic date spots is Marble + Rye by the guys from Black Market Food Truck. Expect a casual yet cozy candlelit table and an evening of delicious cocktails and creative dishes.
Their pasta dishes are fantastic.
Downtown / (716) 253-6453
Whether you’re sitting at the sexy bar or at a table along the banquette, you’re bound to get cozy quick. That’s what sharing small plates and drinking the best cocktails in town before heading upstairs to one of the Hotel Lafayette’s suites will do to you.
We love the Korean Kalbi Beef Steamed Bun.
North East Buffalo / (716) 837-2326 / Reservations
This Cajun/Creole restaurant and wine bar on the north end of Main Street in Buffalo offers delicious, comforting food with a romantic neighborhood bistro vibe. If you want special occasion food and wine in an atmosphere that doesn’t make you feel the need to whisper-yell across the table all night, Shango’s here for you.

Blasdell / (716) 240-9830 / Reservations for 6 or more
This Blasdell “bystro” is a strong representation of what you can do with a little elbow grease, locally sourced product and blossoming culinary talent in an un-suspecting neighborhood. It’s possible this is the most funky on the list – in a good way. The food is stunning, the space is interesting and the service on point and barley there at the same time. Perfect for a hot date.
We love the Scallops, Farmhouse Frites and pretty much anything on their specials menu.
Elmwood Village / (716) 551-6262
While many may slot Vera as the bar of choice for a V-day drink date, we believe it to fall even more appropriately into the romantic restaurant category. The bar is fun, but the adjacent tables are cozy, candlelit and in close proximity to some of our favorite cocktails – excellent for starting (and ending) the evening on the right note.
We love the fig jam pizza.
