So much of what we consider “garbage” is actually not waste and can be put to good use through composting. While composting is actually a pretty simple way to make a difference in bettering our planet, many people just don’t know about this practice or how it works. Luckily for us, there are multiple drop-off location sites around the area that make composting that much easier and attainable. But first, here’s a few things you should know about composting:

  1. Yard waste and food waste, ie: Food scraps and plant-based materials, are generally your best bet when it comes to composting with a few exceptions
    • ✅ fruits, vegetables, egg shells, coffee grounds, etc.
    • ✅ grass clippings, leaves, logs, etc.
    • ❌ meat, dairy, liquids, grease/oils
  2. In the same regard, if it is not a plant-based or once living material this cannot be composted
    • ❌ plastic, glass, styrofoam, metals, etc.
  3. Some great resources for getting involved in/learning more about composting are with Cornell University’s NYS Compost Facilities Map and with Buffalo’s composting professionals at Farmer Pirates Compost and BFLO Worm Works.
