If you’re in the mood to shop uber-local, we’re here to tell you that Elmwood Village isn’t the only place to do it. Don’t get me wrong, some of our favorites are on Elmwood, but it’s time to realize that Hertel Ave has blossomed into a stacked strip of trendy shops. While you’re up North, catch a classic film at North Park Theater, enjoy a bite at Craving and grab a coffee/catch an act at Daily Planet Coffee Co. Here’s a guide to a few of our favorite Hertel spots.

Modern Nostalgia is a woman’s clothing and accessories boutique full of trendy pieces. Their unique clothing is a plus, but I’m most in love with their accessories. My favorite piece right now? Their Buffalo nickel necklaces. If you’re looking for something to catch the eyes of passersby’s, try a piece from Modern Nostalgia. Tip: check out the Makers Buffalo events often held at Mod Nos. Plus, they host free yoga classes on Thursdays.

Looking for a sweatshirt, T-shirt or hat that will capture attention? The New Buffalo Graphics creates posters, clothing, hats, and cards to represent our frigid winters and our Buffalo teams. I love seeing people crack a smile when I wear my smoky grey Sabres sweatshirt sporting two snow shovels where the swords usually are in the logo.

Pasta Peddler & Blackbird Sweets
1547 Hertel Ave in Buffalo / (716) 253-1115
The Pasta Peddler and Blackbird Sweets share a space at 1547 Hertel Ave. This is a great spot to check out right after the Horsefeathers winter market. After you get a mouth full of Pasta Peddler’s gourmet artisan pasta, sauce, and raviolis, plain old boring pasta from the supermarket just won’t cut it anymore. I love the red wine pasta and have been dying to sink my teeth into the stuffed hot pepper ravioli full of hot peppers, ricotta, mozzarella, provolone, asiago, onion, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Hello cheese! Their selection of seasoned salts can spice up (literally) any meal. Blackbird Sweets is owned and operated by Andrea Amodeo, a professional cake artist and serves up some scrumptious cupcakes and treats. Savor a cranberry orange white chocolate cupcake to give yourself a sugar rush that will help you finish your day of shopping on Hertel!

P.S. Accessories is full of fun handbags, jewelry, clothing and more. Everything comes around full circle I suppose, so apparently leg warmers are in again (according to my little sister). I bought my sister the cutest burgundy leg warmers with buttons on top, so they poke out of her boots. The best part is everything is affordable and fashionable.

This luxury furniture boutique is the brianchild of Michael Poczkalski and David Brugh, offering classic contemporary styling for residential homes and commercial interiors. The shop was created to provide Buffalo with a beautiful collection of quality furniture and accessories from sustainable brands and eco-friendly designs. A visit to room on Hertel doesn’t end with the original concept – that is room. You’ll find their expansions to included babyroom, which offers Buffalo a “baby cool” option, and sprout, providing “all you need for Buffalo’s changing seasons”. As you can see, it’s well worth a trip and is certainly a must stop on a Hertel shopping spree.

Equally as stacked as it’s sister shop on Elmwood, this locally owned consignment shop has a lot to offer. It’s the kind of second-hand store that takes it upon themselves to showcase what they’ve got through Facebook and Instagram and right in store. They don’t over crowd the racks so that it’s impossible to find anything and they take pride in knowing that the items they stock have a lot left to give. Great prices, great options, friendly staff and style. What more can you ask for in a consignment shop? Oh and by the way, rumor has it they’re opening a third store in Williamsville.
1478 Hertel Ave in Buffalo / (716) 425-1575
The Painted House features artfully refurbished furniture, decorations to add that wow factor to your place, and fun gifts. Their colorful jar candles will fill your place with yummy scents and add a pop of color to any room.
The Second Reader Bookshop: Used Books
1419 Hertel Ave in Buffalo / (716) 862-0001
When you visit this used bookstore, be prepared to spend some time. Allow yourself an afternoon to dust off a few good books and do some digging. It’s fun to get lost exploring the options! I know we’re in the midst of the “age of the Kindle,” but there’s nothing quite like finding a new story that you maybe wouldn’t have thought to search for online.
Village Beer Merchant North
