The city of Lockport is a very special piece of our local heritage puzzle. Many many years ago, this community was built on the shores of the Erie Canal, and that’s exactly where the name Lockport comes from.

The stories from this time period are incredible. If you’ve ever wanted to experience them, now’s your chance. Come end of September, there’s an entire festival dedicated to celebrating Lockport – it’s called Locktoberfest.

This event isn’t all Bavarian pretzels and beer steins. Activities to look forward to at Locktoberfest include historic reenactment photos, lock demonstrations, historic bike tours, and so much more.

Real quick – the 2-hour narrated cycling tour Locktoberfest offers sounds soooo dreamy. If the canal could talk, think of the stories it would tell. You’ll hear a few as you travel down the path. FYI- if you’re planning to cycle the start time is at 9:30 a.m. Also, tickets are $15 each. Students, don’t worry there are discounts for you. Groups can also save $ by purchasing tickets together.

The entire Locktoberfest event caters to all ages and is both family-friendly and 21+ friendly. Kids can enjoy fair games, balloon animals, and selfies with Sal the Mule. Adults can look forward to trips to and from the beer tent. Lock 34 Bar and Grill will be pouring a selection from some of WNY’s finest breweries.

Something everyone can get excited about? The German festival fare. If homemade soft pretzels speak to you on a spiritual level, you’ll be a happy festival goer.

Plus, there’s live entertainment all day long. The Old Hippies, Dave Stockton and Pocket Change, Tom Keefer and Celtic Cross, and Pine Fever are on the lineup. If you like history, beer, pretzels, fun times, or all of the above, you’ll want to add this event to your social calendar.
