If you’ve been to Clarence Center, you know that it is quite possibly the cutest little village center in WNY. Just a block from the ever-popular Clarence Center Coffee Co. you’ll find Mardee’s Diner on a side-street just waiting for you to walk through the front door. Its country-bumpkin decor will immediately make you feel like you’re back at grandma’s dining room table as a child.
Being from Akron, I was already familiar with Mardee’s as a family haunt when I was younger, so I was excited to revisit when I was given the assignment, knowing that I wouldn’t be disappointed. Mardee’s has an all-day breakfast menu and a lunch menu served from 11 am to close Monday – Friday. As you can see from the menu, you will not be short of choices for either meal.
We ordered the giant cinnamon roll to start to start and mulled over the rest of the menu while we waited for our beverages and dessert first. I remembered my dad used to always get the casserole special and loved it, but that was during a time when I only ever wanted to eat pancakes or french toast for breakfast if we were going out somewhere, so I knew this time around I’d have to get it for myself, and my friend was in the mood for a grilled cheese so he ordered a grilled cheese with bacon from the lunch menu.
Right as we were about to order our mains, our server looks over to the food window and says “oh, there’s your cinnamon roll, I’ll go grab it!” and walks back over with the biggest cinnamon roll I’ve ever seen. Which leads me to my next point, *objects in picture may appear smaller than they are IRL*, haha. It’s rare that I can’t finish a cinnamon roll, especially with the help of another person, but I did have to stop myself at some point because I knew I’d be too full for my casserole special.
Mardee’s breakfast casserole is essentially a cheesy potato hash with onions and it is delightful. I love to combine my food onto one forkful and get all of the flavors in my mouth, so between my buttery english muffin, salty bacon, perfectly cooked over-easy eggs and the casserole, I was a happy camper. The grilled cheese was as pleasant as any grilled cheese from a diner should be, with a generous portion of bacon and a nice, crunchy exterior.
For a Monday morning visit around 11 am, I was glad to see that Mardee’s is still a popular place for couples, families, friends, and colleagues to gather and get a nice bite to eat.
