There’s nothing better than seeing a new business restore an establishment to its former glory. The latest business to tackle this venture is the new Buffalo Olde Brewery.
Located on Buffalo’s East Side, Buffalo Olde Brewery has made a home for itself among two historic sites in the Lovejoy neighborhood.
According to their website, Buffalo Olde Brewery was once the site of The Olde Theater Building which was originally built in 1890. In 1914 it was converted to the HopfStar Theater, remaining a theater for several decades. However, at the end of the 20th century, the theater had fallen to despair and was later converted into a furniture store, game room, tanning salon, and finally a wireless store. Now housed under Buffalo Olde Brewery, the space has been fully renovated, leaning into its historic significance.

While the theater space acts as the main brewing area, Buffalo Olde Brewery also occupies the building next door for their bar room and dining space. Along with the theater, this building has some historical importance as well. Built in 1900, The Olde Bar Building became Propis Grill in 1910, working as a speakeasy throughout the prohibition era and remaining open up until 1995. To honor the building’s history, the exterior and front bar have been renovated to align with its original charm.
As far as what to expect at Buffalo Olde Brewery, currently on tap you’ll find everything from IPAs and stouts, to lagers, sours, ales, and more. Not sure what to order? Among their food options, you’ll find what their website describes as “refined dining, with some of Buffalo’s classics interspersed.”
For starters you’ll find, chicken wing dip, pierogi, wings, beef on weck, and stuffed banana peppers. Further leaning into Lovejoy’s history, the menu also features “The Old Cheese Burger,” which is inspired by Lovejoy’s famous “Warzel Burger.” The “Warzel Burger” is best described as a high-quality, eight-ounce, beef patty with four cheese “towers” made from Velveeta cheese with ketchup at the center. Beyond the Buffalo classics, the menu also includes a steak entree, garlic parm chicken breast, and garden salad.
