Maybe you care that the new Extra Extra Pizza in Buffalo’s Five Points neighborhood is a worker-owned cooperative. Maybe you care that the pizzeria has taken a principled stand against tipping. Or maybe you don’t.
Pizzerias, for the most part, are utilitarian. You go to them wanting something familiar and comforting. Well, if that’s the case, you’re going to like Extra Extra Pizza. The restaurant’s website says it serves New York-style pizza, but one look at the cup-n-char pepperoni and you’ll notice there’s definitely a Buffalo influence going on here. Most people say the 14-inch medium pizza ($16 for cheese only) is big enough for two people to share, and the 20-inch large pie ($22) is what you order for bigger parties. You can also order a much heartier pizza with a thick, Sicilian-style crust ($24).

If you’re feeling a bit extra, and a simple cheese-n-pep pizza won’t do, the menu has a lot to dig into. Extra Extra definitely sets itself apart with its toppings. Some of the more notable ones include oil-preserved eggplant, a hot maple sauce and white anchovies. The small menu also features two specialty pies: A Sicily-influenced pie with tomato, onion, anchovies, romano and oregano ($21/29/31 for medium, large and Sicilian crust); and a pie with white sauce, pesto, ricotta and lemon zest ($20/28/30). The pizzeria does have vegan and gluten-free options for those who need them. A small “Not Pizza” section of the menu includes a house salad and small plates.

Extra Extra Pizza has a full bar, with a small wine list as the main highlight. Whether you want a white wine that’s crisp with minerality, or a red wine that’s dry and herbal, Extra Extra has something that speaks to your modern tastes. The menu features a small selection of craft cocktails, amaros and aperitifs. The beer section includes strong representation from local breweries like Community Beer Works and Thin Man. There’s also Budweiser ($5) and Busch NA ($5).

Extra Extra might seem a bit, excuse us, extra. But at the end of the day, it’s a great pizzeria for the burgeoning West Side neighborhood. The brightly-colored interior and exterior is vivid enough to chase away your Seasonal Affected Disorder, while the noble stance against tipping makes you feel like Extra Extra is at least trying to do the right thing by their worker-owners.
“Pizza! Pizza!”, it is not.
