A lot of local restaurants serve dishes that are mashups of foods you wouldn’t think to put together, but no other restaurant has taken the kitchen sink approach to their menu and had success like Macy’s Place Pizzeria.

Named for the place they go viral, the Instagram Pizzas at Macy’s Place have featured everything from SpaghettiOs to burrata cheese to fried chicken. The unconventional approach extends to both the chicken wings and hot sub sandwiches.

Owner Nick Argy recently told us he never knows which combinations will take off.

“We’ve made things that we thought were going to work, that flopped. We’ve also made things that take off out of nowhere,” he says. “Like, we posted a chicken-and-waffle pizza in December (2021), and it went viral nationally. It was getting picked up by every media outlet. That really took on a life of its own. I couldn’t believe how much it got blasted out on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.”

“I’d like to add that we also make a great cheese and pepperoni,” he adds.

Riding the success of viral pizzas, Macy’s Place recently opened a second location on Delaware Avenue in Kenmore. Argy’s says the new location will largely resemble the original, but will have a slimmed-down menu until the new crew gets up to speed.

Seemingly out of nowhere, this otherwise non-descript block of Delaware Avenue has become a food and drink hotspot. The new Macy’s Place is on the same block as a Fattey Beer Company location. Down the street is the Szechuan hot spot Home Taste and across from that is the new location for Black Iron Bystro, with its new tasting menu concept. This small two-block span will also soon be home to the highly anticipated, 70s-themed Nowhere Lounge.

There’s a lot of hype surrounding this little pocket of Kenmore, and Argy says he’s feeling higher expectations for his wildly successful pizzeria.

“There’s some pressure,” he admits. “There are definitely expectations that we’ll keep doing different wonky stuff, and so we gotta meet those expectations going forward at both locations.”

While he’s been busy opening the new Kenmore location, Argy says he’s itching to get back in the test kitchen and work out some new ideas. Fans of the original Macy’s Place shouldn’t be worried about a dropoff, however.

“We have such a backlog of ideas,” Argy says. “We’ve made so much stuff over the past few years. I can always bring back some options that aren’t on the menu right now. We definitely plan on making some new stuff too.

“I’m excited to get back in the kitchen and make some new fun stuff again,” he says.
