Owner Andrew Smiedala is no stranger to the kitchen. He graduated from culinary school in 2008 and went on to work in three restaurants owned by famous Spanish Chef, Jose Andres. Smiedala eventually quit these jobs to open up his own food truck in Alexandria, Virginia called Tortuga, and attracted hundreds of people from all over Virginia and Washington DC. After deciding to sell the truck and move home to raise a family with his wife, Smiedala set grounds for Tortuga Sandwich Shop which opened its doors in November 2020.

The shop sells a variety of sandwiches inspired by Southern and Central American practices. Their Peruvian tribute, called ‘Chino’, comes filled with marinated strip steak, sauteed onions and yellow peppers, blistered tomatoes, spicy cheese sauce, herb aioli, and crispy potatoes. Tortuga Sandwich Shop will also be offering a variety of sides, like french fries loaded with spicy cheese sauce and Peruvian herb aioli or Breaded saffron rice balls stuffed with Manchego cheese. For a sweeter fare, they also offer classic churros and daily specials like their alfajores – shortbread cookies made with salted dulce de leche and shredded coconut.
