If you read Step Out Buffalo at all, you know that one of the restaurants we’re most looking forward to seeing open in 2016 is Aro Bar de Tapas. While the new tapas bar led by Jeremy Horwitz, Chef Scott Kollig and Pastry Chef Monica Kollig (get a look at her gorgeous desserts on Instagram @muhmuhmonica) will officially open in Williamsville at the beginning of February, they gave us a sneak peek at their opening lunch and dinner menus this week. All we have to say is you’re in for a treat Western New York.
As the one and only tapas bar in the area upon opening, Aro will be doing everything they can to ease any apprehension that newcomers may have when it comes to the cuisine. The menu is designed so that it presents the Spanish cuisine in an authentic way, while at the same time is easy to understand if you’re unfamiliar with the language or traditions of Spain. The menu will offer small plates or tapas, as is traditional in Spain, but will also present guests with other opportunities to share or dine in a more traditional American fashion with Large Plates, or entree sized dishes.

While subject to minor changes between now and opening day, Aro’s menu does an excellent job of explaining the multiple ways to order in such a restaurant. “I want you to have options when you come here,” explained Kollig. The experience, and we’re pretty sure this will be a full on experience, is yours for the molding. But if you want our personal recommendation it’s shared plates all day, every day.
Among the products used at Aro you’ll find both local and not-quite local varieties including Lockhouse and Tommyrotter Gins (Buffalo), Tom Cat Bakery bread (NYC), Joe Bean Coffee (Rochester), and more than a handful of cheeses from Spain. In addition to the lunch and dinner menus, expect a solid craft cocktail program (these guys have done extensive research at a few Spanish Gintonerias) and a good selection of Spanish and other wines, ciders, local beer, sangria, and plenty of cava.
So, without further ado, below are the Aro menus. Stay tuned for more juicy details as we get closer to their opening!
