There are a few cafes in Buffalo that do their caffeine so right. Remedy House is one of them.
There are a few bars in Buffalo that do their alcohol so right. Marble + Rye is one of them.
There are a few patisseries in Buffalo that do their pastries so right. Butter Block is one of them.
So you can only imagine the monumental excitement that came over me when I saw the social media posts announcing a collaborative brunch between these three places. Marble + Rye hosts their space and provides the elixirs, Remedy House sets up shop to make sure you are awake, and the Butter Block team works their magic in the kitchen.
Whilst checking out the menu ahead of time, I realized that it wasn’t going to be acceptable to visit this epic brunch with anything less than a group of four. So I called up the best people I know (my parents and my childhood bff) and we got to brunching.
So here’s the low-down, folks:
If you didn’t know already, M + R Bar Manager Meg Lee is an expert when it comes to assembling a drink menu, and her brunch drink menu is no exception. You can choose from four classic brunch cocktails, four draft beers, and five wines, pretty sure to please any palate. To complement that list in the caffeine department, Remedy House’s selection includes drip coffee, espresso, cappuccino, latte, mocha, and americano. I started with a latte and a blood orange mimosa. I must admit – I typically avoid mimosas because many restaurants choose a champagne that isn’t dry enough, or they put too much juice in it, or just totally biff on the ratio of juice to champagne. Not Meg Lee. Never. Get the blood orange mimosa.
Now for the food. The menu consists of the baker’s board for 2, weekly preparations of quiche, local yogurt pannacotta, wood-fired focaccia, and the ‘best ever ham + cheese croissant’. The Baker’s Board for 2 offers a table of any size a little interaction – Butter Block’s famous petite croissants with your choice of five accoutrements including chocolate hazelnut spread, french butter, fruit preserves, lemon curd, quark, white cow dairy yogurt, pesto, prosciutto, avocado, smoked salmon and pickled red onion.
We ordered everything but the pannacotta (because we’re savages). For the Baker’s Board, we decided to go savory in our croissant toppings since the pastry case offered a variety of sweeter options. We got smoked salmon, avocado, prosciutto, quark, pesto and French butter (yes, six for good measure ;-)). If there’s one thing I love more than eating itself, it’s discovering new combinations of food. Prosciutto, quark, and pesto proved my favorite.
The weekly quiche preparation of bacon and gruyere and the focaccia topped with caramelized onions and a duck egg were pleasant reminders of how the Butter Block ladies are wizards in the kitchen, but the ‘best ever ham + cheese croissant’? They are not lying, my friends. Round your meal off with a couple sweets from the pastry case, and you’ve got yourself the most indulgent Sunday brunch in town.
