July Food & Drink Happenings

Our mission: Construct a monthly list of new openings- restaurants, food trucks, cafes, pubs and breweries, etc. from the previous month. Instead of undertaking the nearly impossible task of predicting which restaurants will actually open in the upcoming month, we decided this strategy would be more valuable for everyone involved. With bureaucrats, bankers and bean counters, unpredictable weather and contractors involved, it’s hard to say when a restaurant is opening until it is already in fact open.

Disclaimer: We recommend you call ahead to be sure you’ll find an open restaurant upon your arrival. Good Luck! Drop us a line at if we missed any July openings/closings.

OG Wood Fire / Step Out Buffalo

OG Wood Fire Pizza

Style: Food Truck

Owner of Buffalo’s newest pizza machine, Jay Langfelder, opened his new Neopolitan inspired food truck early in July to a fanfare of good press and happy foodies. He promises handcrafted pizza dough made with naturally leavened sourdough from imported flour, super high quality ingredients and creative pies that will basically blow you away – even if you’re a pizza snob. Pizzas he’s served in his first month of business included Hot Soprssata, Maplecetta, and of course a traditional Margharita. Did we mention he has an actual wood-burning oven inside his homemade truck? Run, don’t walk. Find out where OG is on Twitter @OGWoodFire.

If you haven’t heard (we’d be surprised if you hadn’t), Hamburg finally has an outstanding burger joint, opened mid July in the former Bistro in the Square space. Think ideal buns, juicy meat, perfect portions, just enough creativity without going overboard (just kidding – there’s a burger with two stuffed banana peppers on it and we love it). We’re thrilled with this place, to say the least.

So this isn’t exactly a place where you can actually consume anything (although you can sample the product), but it’s an opening we think is worth mentioning as far as the food and drink scene goes. The local distillery opened their doors for sales of their handcrafted gin and vodka earlier this month. Expect to see the spirits used in bars and restaurants in Western New York by this fall.

The love child of two food trucks – Roaming Buffalo and Mikey Dee’s. From what we can tell from their Facebook page, they’ve got pool, good drink specials and burgers piled high.

4245 Mckinley Pkwy, Hamburg, NY / (716) 202-4039

Style: Sit-down Mexican

Hamburg’s got a brand spankin’ new Mexican Restaurant in the former Titan’s Steakhouse Space. The restaurant (4th location, 2nd in WNY) looks a bit “chainy” but we won’t judge until we actually try it, which we have yet to do. If you have, let us know what you think – The menu actually looks pretty legit.

Again, technically these guys opened in the last few days of June but who’s counting. Akron is the little brother to Ebenezer (West Seneca) and Eden (Eden) Ale Houses. It brings to the table the same decent draft list, excellent happy hour specials (half-priced appetizers and $3.50 pints of craft beer) and an extensive menu of American pub favorites. Seriously, they’ve got pretty much everything.
