July Food & Drink Happenings
Our mission: Construct a monthly list of new openings- restaurants, food trucks, cafes, pubs and breweries, etc. from the previous month. Instead of undertaking the nearly impossible task of predicting which restaurants will actually open in the upcoming month, we decided this strategy would be more valuable for everyone involved. With bureaucrats, bankers and bean counters, unpredictable weather and contractors involved, it’s hard to say when a restaurant is opening until it is already in fact open.
Disclaimer: We recommend you call ahead to be sure you’ll find an open restaurant upon your arrival. Good Luck! Drop us a line at [email protected] if we missed any July openings/closings.

OG Wood Fire Pizza
Style: Food Truck
Owner of Buffalo’s newest pizza machine, Jay Langfelder, opened his new Neopolitan inspired food truck early in July to a fanfare of good press and happy foodies. He promises handcrafted pizza dough made with naturally leavened sourdough from imported flour, super high quality ingredients and creative pies that will basically blow you away – even if you’re a pizza snob. Pizzas he’s served in his first month of business included Hot Soprssata, Maplecetta, and of course a traditional Margharita. Did we mention he has an actual wood-burning oven inside his homemade truck? Run, don’t walk. Find out where OG is on Twitter @OGWoodFire.
Neighborhood: Old First Ward
359 Ganson St., Buffalo, New York
Style: Bar & Grill
The full restaurant at RiverWorks, The Ward, is finally open! You can now head down to the riverside destination to enjoy everything from events to drinks, lunch and dinner. There’s so much going on, we recommend going to see for yourself. As of August, The Ward is now open for lunch at 11 am Monday – Saturday and noon on Sundays.
Juicy Burger Bar
Style: Table Service, Burger Joint, Bar
If you haven’t heard (we’d be surprised if you hadn’t), Hamburg finally has an outstanding burger joint, opened mid July in the former Bistro in the Square space. Think ideal buns, juicy meat, perfect portions, just enough creativity without going overboard (just kidding – there’s a burger with two stuffed banana peppers on it and we love it). We’re thrilled with this place, to say the least.
Marble + Rye
112 Genesee St, Buffalo, NY 14203 / (716) 853-1390
Style: Bar & Restaurant
This highly anticipated opening on Genesee Street by Black Market Food Truck co-owners Christian Willmott and Michael Dimmer offers a casual, urban chic hotspot in a blossoming area of downtown. These guys know what they’re doing and are already pushing the limits with pickled onion rings, bone-marrow-infused burgers , and The Bottle Keep (private liquor lockers). Make a resy now.

Neighborhood: Hydraulic District
Style: Spirit Retail Space
So this isn’t exactly a place where you can actually consume anything (although you can sample the product), but it’s an opening we think is worth mentioning as far as the food and drink scene goes. The local distillery opened their doors for sales of their handcrafted gin and vodka earlier this month. Expect to see the spirits used in bars and restaurants in Western New York by this fall.
Style: Pub & Grill
The love child of two food trucks – Roaming Buffalo and Mikey Dee’s. This chill new bar and grill opened sometime between the end of June and early July, but we figured you should know about it regardless. From what we can tell from their Facebook page, they’ve got pool, good drink specials and burgers piled high.
Style: Sit-down Mexican
Hamburg’s got a brand spankin’ new Mexican Restaurant in the former Titan’s Steakhouse Space. The restaurant (4th location, 2nd in WNY) looks a bit “chainy” but we won’t judge until we actually try it, which we have yet to do. If you have, let us know what you think – [email protected] The menu actually looks pretty legit.
2896 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14217 / (716) 447-8989
Style: Mexican Grocery Store, Take Out, Eat In
Any day we can report multiple Mexican “restaurant” openings that serves corn tortillas is a happy, happy day. We recently heard about this new Mexican grocery store that opened in July with a small restaurant inside from Buffalo Eats. According to them, the food is delicious and there are about a dozen seats available to eat in, so don’t go expecting anything too fancy, just really tasty.
Akron Ale House
Style: Bar & Grill
Again, technically these guys opened in the last few days of June but who’s counting. Akron is the little brother to Ebenezer (West Seneca) and Eden (Eden) Ale Houses. It brings to the table the same decent draft list, excellent happy hour specials (half-priced appetizers and $3.50 pints of craft beer) and an extensive menu of American pub favorites. Seriously, they’ve got pretty much everything.
Neighborhood: UB South
Style: Counter Service, Eat In, Take Out
This Chinese BBQ restaurant opened on Main Street near UB south last month. According to our friends at Buffalo Eats, Eddie’s Chophouse has a pretty exciting menu of authentic Chinese food including rice boxes and noodle bowls, and a nice space to boot. Good for them!
Chef’s Food Truck
Style: Food Truck
Yep, you read that right. Chef’s Restaurant now has their very own food truck, which hit the streets of Buffalo in early July. Expect a lot of Chicken Parm, Eggplant Parm, Spaghetti Parm, you know – all the parms. Let’s hope this idea goes further than their short-lived, drive up pizza window.
1400 Niagara Falls Blvd., Tonawanda / (716) 837-8888
Style: Table Service
Tonawanda now has a new Asian Restaurant on Niagara Falls Blvd.
Although jojo actually closed a few months ago, it wasn’t until this past month that we were able to confirm they were closed for good, as their website just said they were closing for a few weeks for a remodel. Unfortunately, they decided to make it permanent. Goodbye jojo, we’ll miss you.
