Big news from one of our favorite Elmwood Ave spots – the beloved plant-based restaurant Root & Bloom is transforming themselves into a new fast casual concept called “Big Mood”.
According to a recent 2-part series of Facebook posts that started off sad but ended on an exciting high note, Root & Bloom is closing their doors on June 21 to get ready to relaunch under a new business model on July 15.
The new concept, Big Mood, was inspired by the desire to maintain a relevant edge (with a retro twist), serve food faster, and limit unnecessary contact between people. The restaurant will serve “nearly all from scratch food” that will be reworked for a fresh, fast casual atmosphere.
“We’re going for a fresher, crisper version for quicker service, surfaces that are less cluttered and easier to clean, and an atmosphere that was crafted for a fresh fast menu. We’re striving to get you in and out of the space faster, and create a menu that is founded on that principle. Instead of dishes that were lovingly created for a slow casual service (that have inevitably needed to be converted to takeout), we’re regrouping and making food that is meant to be served that way whether you sit down at a table, or you take your meal to-go.”
The menu will remain plant-based and will feature crafted salads and bowls, handhelds and burgers, starters and sides, including Root & Bloom’s famous jack-fruit wings and vegan mac ‘n cheese.
They will also have a small selection of beverages like lemonade, sweet tea, and milkshakes, plus specialty drinks like a color changing layered beverage, a chaga rootbeer float, and some favorite beverage brands from California like Olipop.
The dessert menu will include pie slices, layered cake push-pops, and cookies – for now or later.
In their recent post, they mentioned that everything will be wrapped or packaged, but assured followers that it will “still look great for photos and sharing”.
“We’ve made this decision for a variety of reasons, the primary being the health and wellness of our staff, as we don’t want them continuously washing dishes as we continue to move through unknown health and safety territory. Also, our space is very small, and this gives us some freedoms we desperately need to produce food quicker.”
The new brand and BIG MOOD menu will go live on 6/21, with a grand opening planned for July 15, 2020.
The plan is to have the patio opened for a short time this summer, as well as seating indoors at half capacity and with proper social distancing spacing, in time for their grand reopening. In addition, they are working to continue curbside pickup with options to either visit a dedicated pickup shelf inside to grab your online order when ready in a contactless manner, or a team member can bring it out to you.
