Saigon Cafe Takes Corner of Elmwood & Utica
If you’re like many Buffalonians, you’ve passed by the former Mode building at least a few times in the past couple years wondering what might possibly transform this vacant space into something you’d like to look at, or better yet eat at.
The day finally came (last December), and that restaurant is Saigon Cafe. The restaurant, formerly located down the street on Elmwood Avenue, serves “Authentic Vietnamese and Thai Cuisine”, offering an array of noodles, rice plates, curry and other exotic entrees I won’t even pretend to be able to pronounce. (maybe one day)
Upon entering the new Saigon Cafe, you’ll find a bar across from a row of cozy booths. Overall it’s a similar layout to previous restaurants that occupied the space. If you ask me, they did a nice job transforming the space into a spot I wouldn’t mind coming to tackle a bowl of pho any day of the week.

They have 14 beers on tap and are now taking reservations. The opening local brew lineup (becoming the usual around here – in a good way) includes Hamburg, Flying Bison, Southern Tier and Big Ditch along with some great non-local craft options like Ommegang and Great Lakes. Wine and liquor are also available.
This week will be another round of soft openings from 4pm-10pm for dinner service and 2pm for the late night crowd. Regular hours will (hopefully) start next week from Sunday to Wednesday, 11am – 10pm, Thursday to Saturday 11am – 12am, with the bar open late.
I can’t say that I ever had the pleasure of eating Saigon Cafe’s food at their previous location, so I won’t be helpful in the comparison department, but I can say, I’m excited to see where this new location takes them. Looks like they’re off to a great start.
