10 Killer Live Shows to See in WNY in May

Another month down, another step closer to summer, and, for the sake of this post, summer concert season and its endless selection of live music offerings. Yay! That kick-off is normally Memorial Day Weekend in these parts, so think of this list as your pre-game before the real action gets going. Here are the 10 shows that should be on your radar for the month of May.

 

 

1. Welcome to Night Vale

DATE: May 1st

LOCATION: Asbury Hall

COST: $28

The cult podcast detailing the strange occurrences in the desert town of Night Vale will be recorded live on stage within the Babeville walls.

2. Wildhoney

DATE: May 4th

LOCATION: Mohawk Place

COST: $7-$10

Combined 60’s pop, post-punk, and shoegaze Baltimore’s Wildhoney will bring its lush live show back to Buffalo for a date at the downtown music hotspot. New-to-the-scene emo act honey will help to open the show.

 

3. Made Violent

DATE: May 5th

LOCATION: The Studio at Waiting Room

COST: $5

Buffalo’s next-big-thing Made Violent will headline the local show of the year contender. The suddenly resurfaced heartland rockers Sixties Future and the buzzing garage trio Ugly Sun will also perform.

 

4. Suburbs

DATE: May 6th

LOCATION: The Modeling Factory

COST: $3

The pop-tronic project featuring members of Tomoreaux and Award Show will celebrate the release of the new cassette candyflip at the Allentown DIY space. Bottler, Hot Tip, and Pine Fever will make up the eclectic local bill.

5. Dance Yrslf Clean

DATE: May 6th

LOCATION: Milkie’s on Elmwood

COST: $5

The re-occurring dance party will once again present a night full of modern and classic indie cuts. All proceeds collected at the door will be donated to Planned Parenthood.

 

 

6. SMUG

DATE: May 12th

LOCATION: Mohawk Place

COST: $5

Formerly known as the grunge-loving trio the Naturalists, the now re-branded SMUG will perform a “debut” set to show off its new direction. dreambeaches, the Slums, and Rochester’s Green Dreams will complete the local heavy lineup.

 

7. Deafheaven

DATE: May 16th

LOCATION: The Rapids Theatre

The critically acclaimed black-metal band will be making its latest WNY appearance as an opening act for the French genre-bending act Gojira at the Niagara Falls ballroom.

 

 

8. PUP

DATE: May 19th

LOCATION: The Studio at Waiting Room

COST: $16-$18

The locally loved Toronto punk rock band will make its latest Buffalo appearance as the quartet continues to tour in support of its well-received sophomore album, 2016’s The Dream is Over.

 

9. SNEW Fest

DATE: May 19th

LOCATION: Curly’s

COST: $5

Part 1 of the two-day festival will highlight a collection of new(er) bands currently making the rounds of Buffalo’s DIY community. Steak and Cake Records will host.

 

10. Chance the Rapper

DATE: May 31st

LOCATION: Darien Lake

COST: $28.50-$86

The newly-minted Grammy winning rapper will bring his well-timed tour to Darien Lake as the performing arts center continues to kick off its summer season.
