SOB Top Picks for Restaurant Week Spring 2015

Bacon Wrapped Dates at Elm Street Bakery

Bacon Wrapped Dates at Elm Street Bakery

The next Local Restaurant Week thankfully comes at a time when we’re desperate for a pick-me-up. This is what we’re into right now. That doesn’t mean there aren’t tons of fantastic options on this list of participating restaurants. Truthfully, we could go on and on. Some of these are based on SOB favorites thanks to regular menus and ambiance, some of these are based on places we love, plus the addition of an outstanding LRW menu offering. These are just some ideas to get the noggin flowing. Remember, stopping at just one restaurant week meal is for newbs. Let us know what you think of your LRW choices after you visit in the comments below!

Hanger Steak at Buffalo Proper

Hanger Steak at Buffalo Proper

Buffalo Proper

Downtown / $$$ / lrw

Buffalo Proper, one of downtown’s best new restaurant offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy a significant restaurant week menu while picking and choosing small plates to add to the experience at low cost.  Their Local Restaurant Week menu offers a 9oz Hanger Steak with Black Quinoa and Oles Roasted Carrots paired with an Argentinian Cabernet or Roasted chicken Thigh with Chestnut Puree, toasted couscous and fennel apple relish paired with a Spanish Rioja. We recommend trying the Eggs and Potatoes from their regular menu as well, one of our favorite dishes of 2014.

Elm Street Bakery

Elm Street Bakery

Elm Street Bakery

East Aurora / $$ / lrw

While Elm Street Bakery has yet to release their Spring 2015 LRW menu, we’re confident whatever Chef Brad Rowell and team think up is going to be worth the risky reservation – mostly because, we’ve never had a bad dish here. At this bakery by day, upscale hearth by night, find creative wood-fired plates like Hen of the Wood Mushroom Tartine and Wood-roasted Little Neck Clams.  If you’re looking for interesting, satisfying and special, ESB is the place to spend your $20.15 this time around.

Encore

Encore

Encore

Downtown / $$ / lrw

This steak and seafood spot located in the heart of Buffalo’s theater district provides not only a moody atmosphere ready to warm you right up, but an outstanding LRW menu. The selection is unique in it’s offerings. Instructions lead you to choose one entree and two flight items from a list of four. To give you a taste, flight two features a collection of soups and salads like Caprese, Wedge, French Onion, Seafood Bisque, Mesclun, and Ceasar. Clever, isn’t it? Plus you can add additional flight items for just $5. Repeat after me: “One of each, please.”

Mediterranean Platter at Merge

Mediterranean Platter at Merge

Merge

Downtown / $$ / lrw

Specializing in healthy, wholesome food with plenty of Vegetarian friendly options, but that’s not all. We recently enjoyed a delicious meal at Merge, with highlights including the Mediterranean Platter, Shrimp Risotto and Coq au Vin. If you’re a vegetarian or dinning with one, this is always a solid choice for a night out. But even if you’re not, we urge the meat eaters of the group to snag some of Merge’s LRW resys.

Risotto Cakes at Osteria 166

Risotto Cakes at Osteria 166

Osteria 166

Downtown / $$ /  lrw

Osteria 166 has a Restaurant Week menu that puts many to shame. One look will have your eyes wide and you’re belly rumblin’. This three course meal requires room for one of six apps like Risotto Di Giorno or Bruscheta Miste, an entree from a list of eight, featuring dishes like Bucatini Carbonara, Steak & Stuffed Pepper Sandwich and Pork Osso Bucco and Risotto and a third course of either dessert or wine, you pick. We won’t judge. Plus they have a $20.15 bottle of wine special to top it off.

Smoke on the Water

Tonawanda / $$ / lrw

This Tonawanda BBQ haven – owned by a team of brothers by the name of Kevin, JJ and Mark Richert – will offer a dinner LRW menu Tuesday through Saturday including a starter and an entree, plus $20.15 bottles of wine. Their usual menu is chalk full of smokey, satisfying meats and sides that will make you think you were somewhere in Louisiana instead of this snow globe we live in.

Chicken Curry Sun Wrap at Sun Resturant

Sun Restaurant

West Side / $ / lrw

This West Side gem, helmed by Chef Kevin and Stephanie Lin, will offer both lunch and dinner specials Monday through Sunday during Spring Restaurant Week. For dinner options, choose from a Burmese Feast, a Thai Feast, and a Japanese Feast,  each with at least three courses.

Tappo

Tappo

Tappo

Downtown / $$ / lrw

Tappo’s urban chic atmosphere is the perfect place to consume a mid week, American Italian menu for $20.15. $20.15 for two that is – including two entrees and a bottle of wine. We will certainly drink to that deal. And you should too.

The Lodge

The Lodge

The Lodge Bar + Grill

Downtown / $$ / lrw

If you have yet to stop by this extravagant, lodge inspired restaurant and bar on the Chip Strip, you should really get on it. There’s really nothing like it in Buffalo, from the forest behind the bar to the arctic lounge upstairs. Local Restaurant Week presents the perfect opportunity to give it a shot, as they’re offering a three course meal complete with options like Chicory and Arugula Salad, Goat Cheese and Walnut Agnolotti with Wild Mushroom Ragout and Blueberries and S’mores for dessert.

Potato Pancakes at Winfield's Pub

Potato Pancakes at Winfield’s Pub

Winfield’s Pub

Lackawanna / $$ / lrw

If you haven’t noticed already, we love this uber unassuming Lackawanna gastro pub. It provides everything one could want in a relaxed, unpretentious, quality, casual meal – and we really appreciate that. Elevated pub fare is underrated, not over. Although they have yet to post their LRW menu, we’re betting it’s going to be good. If you have a chance to try the potato pancakes, the Lamb Burger or Kiki’s warm potato salad, just say yes.
